Spelling rules

I have noticed people sp3ll1ng different 5ubs7@nces differently in many posts.

Is this a best practice or rule to do it this way or is it just some faux opsec?

This. Anybody/any”thing”(if you search active members it’s like 90% bots of varying companies/origins clearly and actively searching/watching the site) already aware of this place, as somebody else who I can’t remember(may have been @xenxra which I don’t think I spelled right) put it “it’s like hiding in plain site, in a dark forest against people wearing night vision goggles” or something to that effect. It’s not to protect you per se, but more so to protect visibility of the site by people searching certain words, especially those of obscure or new magazines or ones that that result in your posts being altered/removed or you being banned for even talking about.

But in the same regard there’s things that shouldn’t be openly said or discussed no matter how it’s spelled(or misspelled) as it’s a surefire way to get this place shut the fuck down faster than a fly on shit. These things should be obvious, but it seems new members that likely joined because many people don’t alter any spelling are the biggest offenders of openly asking and discussing things that shouldn’t be talked about period, at least anywhere outside of a private and preferably e2e encrypted method of communication. While I admittedly am far from a perfect, or even good example keeping things vague and to the point without any real discussion or names or anything are a key element of protecting yourself and others in the event that somebody somewhere deems this place of interest to do whatever against.

Alternative names/abbreviations keep traffic down, which keeps attention down, which allows this place to exist without being a target of real interest. It isn’t a m@rk£t. It’s not a website that allows, condones or promotes the s@l£ or use of anything questionable in the eyes of L£, but rather a place for people to discuss the reputation, legitimacy and to leave reviews of authors and to call out the ones who scam.

I just wish the vendor's threads/posts were *totally* locked down in a private/protected area, but I don't run the Forum and it's not my Rules. But members should be always vigilant, IMHO.
 
Something I'm curious about with the alternative spellings thing: how much should spellings be altered?

If the word I want to write about is "apple", would it suffice to write "@pple"?

Or would it better to go with something like "@pp1£"?

There's a fair bit of variation in the way different users write the names of things. Sometimes it's obvious what they're writing and other times it requires some mental gymnastics to figure out. This is especially true when people are discussing a novel or generally unknown item - if the reader doesn't already know what the thing is, they might not be able to de-code the alternative spelling.

Is it possible that some forum members may be over-complicating things? Or is it possible that I have been oversimplifying things by only changing a couple of letters to symbols or numbers?

Some guidance on this would be appreciated.

Good question and tbh I have no idea. My version of the Rosetta Stone mainly depends on how many paragraphs I read and how fast I read them. Which goes hand in hand with my ability/willingness to think of fast, alternative ways to write shit out.

Simple alterations are easiest to comprehend. Like @LW815 said, it’s to discourage bots from finding us using proper spellings in searches.
As a paid member, you will be able to search posts outside of here, on any search engine. So don’t be surprised if you do search a term and find information here. Just because you can see doesn’t mean those who don’t pay can see also.
Parts of the forum can be seen by anyone. The Shoutbox, for example, can be seen and that’s why we discourage anything there to be about specifics of the site.

One thing I need to always tell myself - aside from reminding myself not to be too wordy, ( one of my bad habits ) is if I am behind on reviews and perhaps time ( need to get somewhere ) not to rush myself if I have maybe 2 or 3 reviews. I tend to WANT to just say what happened just to give my ( usually ) thumbs up, but i KNOW I can't and wouldn't do that. I sometimes get jealous of people who are so short and to the point and use the correct "@pp!e" version. But if I rushed myself, I may make an error and although my heart is in the review and I want to be cool to the vendor, it's harmful to be rushed. So take your time and just do what you can IF you're like me and feel you need to get all 3, for example, done. The vendors won't yell at you! It's best to concentrate ESPECIALLY when the topics include Brown, 5 Letter, etc... and what happens when those "names" do their jobs. I do find myself locked when trying to make it clear that I was happy "that 5 Letter" landed early or late...

I think my touch of anxiety I've had all my life doesn't help when I want to get things done, so I need to be slower and thought out.

Is it possible that we could come up with a unicode section so people can copy+paste various letters that might be hard to remember that help reduce SEO? things like Ω or such the like might be helpful to members so they can search for fun ways to spell their words? I like the creativity of this forum and enjoy the ways around the crawlers. Might be a good way to give members a means to translate without much difficulty too, though I'm not sure that wouldn't create new methods to update the spiders.

I created a text document that I called "Special Characters" and pinned it to my desktop (and is always open) - that wouldn't be as helpful for the (probably) 99% of folks who browse here from their phone, though.

My code that I’ve rolled with since my hs years is to keep it vague enough for the wooks to not know what the hell I’m talking about and to just be clear enough for the ones who play the game, to know what’s up. It’s like the adage of, IYKYK. No reason to overcomplicate to avoid b0ts/alg0rithmic scrapes and bad actors; a single letter replaced with a character or a phonetically altered spelling will suffice. Now, here in this setting, common sense is our best friend; use some sense before you post-ask yourself how little info you can write while still getting your point across. Stay safe all!
