Dea Spoof Calls

Hi, not sure where this belongs exactly so if it is in the wrong place, please accept my apologies.  This morning, i received a voice mail on my home phone supposedly from a DEA agent.  This is the exact transript of the message.  "This call is for ***my name***.  My name is special agent Matthew Barnes with the drug enforcement administration.  Mister ***my last name*** you need to contact me immediately at 240-200-7786, extension number 314.  It is urgent that you contact me today.  I will be waiting for your call.  Thank you"

OK... for about 2 seconds I freaked.  I then used a different line to call the number back and there is no way to dial an extension, it's just a voice mail that says you have reached the DEA, we are not available and please leave a message.  (scam clue 1).  Second scam clue, the number is a cell number, not a landline.  (3) The DEA does not have a field office in the 240 area code of Maryland. 

Also, if they (DEA) want to talk to you about any potential activity you may have engaged in, they are not going to call you and announce themselves... they will just show up and get you.  On dea.gov there is a bulletin about this scam going on.  I wanted to share because while it's a scary couple of seconds.... it's bogus and a scam.  They are likely trying to get you to pay a "fine" etc.  But watch your CC close for fraudulent activity.

Thank-you for sharing this, and just a thought, I use an old phone number if a site asks for a phone number.  Nobody legit ever asked or called me. If a company uses a standard form, give them an old number.  Its easy to spoof numbers, and could also be a "friend" playing a joke.

My wife got one of these creeps today -- "DEA" asking for my wife by name, wanted $1000 WU to the DR to pay a file or they were ready to come with her & arrest her..

Now, my wife's name has only been used by 2 non controlled only US NROPs to order PZC.

Never any ROP, other NROP or any IOP. So a US NROP may well be the data source.

Now a long, long, long time ago, i was an affilaite for the biggest of these OPs. I recall you could access customer's name, addy & phone #, item ordered -- & perhaps payment method, but NOT CC #. To build a mailing list or whatever.

Especially after the shutdown of 3 major affiliate OPs, what's an affiliate to do? No golden parachute, but wait! There's 1 asset left, the cuatomer database can be sold. And resold & resold & resold...

Maybe the closures spurred a resurgence in this sick, illegal scam. Seems, after a lull, I'm seeing more & more of these reports here & elsewhere.

Effin prixx should rot in hell. Scaring my innocent wife. Making her shake & cry while she is recovering from a heart attack.

Perhaps someone in your town knows that you have a supply of something and they are trying to go through your garbage!  I have had people die in my life that told me the DEA sent her letters first then when she did not answer them back they started calling her.

It's scary how sophisticated scammers can get. Your hunch that it has to be given to them by an IOP sounds right on the money. Your post is the first I've heard of it. But I have heard of another scam where people were called by "Microsoft Technical Support" asking for remote access to their PC because there was supposedly some malware or corrupt files they needed to fix. I can't recall the name, and I'm sure it changes anyway, but here is a short article that kind of sums it up. The scary thing is they do a lot of research finding someones intimate details before the try to get remote access.

Thanks for making us aware of this. And you did a great job of not over reacting and falling for it. Most people would likely fall for it before taking time to think it through.

I've never used an IOP so VERY confident that someone got hold of the NROP lists after they went the way of the dodo bird!

The calls are from the Dominican Republic. Where many of these scams originate.

Have some FUN with them!! Act scared ...take the payment info ...keep them on the phone ...let them think they got a "live" one!!

Then feel free to call them every dirty name you can pronounce! Whatever ...if you can't pronounce it say it anyway as they won't know the difference! Believe me LOL it's very liberating!

I concur with FG. I receive frequent calls from the DR, among other locations, although never one of these DEA imposter calls. Usually just indicating I "have a refill ready" and wanting money.

Other than a few SL orders, I have never used an IOP either, but did utilize the old NROP as well as ROP's, so it would seem that they are the source of the phone numbers for these people. I also suspect the quasi-defunct Frontier Pharmacy of selling contact information as well, given that I receive these types of calls on a second cell number that I didn't have in the old NROP / ROP days.

Like many men I rarely pick up the phone. Therefore, my wife has suffered several calls from these fools.

Most recently an "agent" left a msg so despite hearing about of many of these calls after the fact, this was the first one I actually heard.

It was the typical implausible spiel, however the scammer was reasonably articulate & likely American born. I could see some folks being quite intimidated. One poor (or lucky) woman who lived in a very small town twice had her WU transfer refused. Fortunately, the 2nd. WU agent talked some sense into her.

Upon googling the #, there were loads of reports just on that # and remember they can change #'s at will. Many reported ordering diet pills years back. Even more suggestive that the list probably came from a US NROP.

Like I said, prixx!!!

Although I haven't gotten fake calls I have rec'd calls from "The Internet Pharmacy" several months ago. Like others I'd fake an accent, then try to have fun with it. 

Of all things they were trying to sell me ED meds. It had to be very hard for them to understand me. Imagine Deputy Dogs voice, add an even slower drawl and a foreign accent mixed with the natural Southern one. It would take them a good five minutes to understand what I was saying. I'll post my conversation in white so it doesn't offend anyone unless they choose to look at it. For those who haven't experienced hiding words using white font, it has to be highlighted to read. It's a good way to cuss someone without hurting their feelings.

It went something like this... "Deak bedy, bedy haad now. You want peak chure? I seend peak chure, deak bedy bedy haad now. You come suk? You suk deak for me? No..... you put deak in jure mouf for me?" Once they understood what I was saying they'd hang up on me.

After 3 or 4 times they left me alone, but it was fun to screw with them for a while. I'd actually forgot about that until just now. If nothing else this thread brought back some funny memories and made me smile.

I believe it's a proven fact that laughter can be one of the best medicines for all sorts of ailments. Probably put a lot of these IOP's out of business. Somebody should invent a "funny pill." Wait a sec, I think I did that blotted paper stuff in highschool. Eventually led to paranoina. Anyways....

I've read a lot of your posts High Tide, in my short time here, and I do find most of them very funny, but also at times quite informative.
