Having some teeth pulled and implants....anyway, the doc's nurse said they will either prescribe oxy 40mg, or vicoden 10/325.  Depending on the pain.  How much stronger is oxy 40mg?  Anyone know?

On a mg to mg basis, Oxy is generally viewed as being 1.5 times as strong as hydro. So, a 40 mg oxy would = 60 mg of hydro (or six of the 10/325).

Just had some major dental issues and used both things you mentioned. The ox seemed to work better for me for pain relief.

The pain was so bad I was not getting a buzz from either product at the time and the ox was the best for the tooth pain even when taking equivalent doses (roughly) per conversion charts.

Are you naive, meaning have you never taken an opie before? If you are I would strongly recommend you NOT take a 40mg Oksey. Even if you have taken them before but have never taken more than one viking and it has been awhile since you have taken them, it could be to much.

When taken for legitimate pain, opies often do not give euphia like they do when used recreationally.

Wow, really! Shit, I just asked a question.  No, would not say I am naive.  Have had some surgeries and such over the years, and most recently dental work.  but, have only ever been prescribled vicoden (or I guess Hydrocodone).  Am having several tooth extractions as well as a sinus lift all at once (then several months later implants).   So it is pretty extensive.  The pain med they give depends on how much pain you are having.  Those were the two meds the nurse referenced the doc may use, just depends.  So, based on what I read here, if I am in serious pain, then may prescribe the stronger med.  I was just curious.

The thing is the HUGE difference in strength between the two. The 40mg can be almost 6 times as strong. Also the amount of pain you are in has nothing to do with the amount it takes to be to much. Your tolerance to opies doesn't increase because you are in more pain.

justhurts.... you may have misunderstood.  He wasn't asking if you were naive but rather opiate naive, two totally different things.  I thought you could have misunderstood by your reaction when you said "Shit, I just asked a question".  Even if you have had vicodeens in the past if you have not had any  for a period of time it would mean you had a low tolerance in which case the 40mg. would knock you on your ass.  I had major surgery having a section of intestines removed and they sent me home with 10mg.

Yeah sorry if you misunderstood, I left out the opiate. Opiate naive is a medical that means you have never taken an opiate before and often used when determining the amount that should be prescribed. If you are opiate naive then a 40mg Oxy could kill you and that why I said that I would strongly recommend you not take it.

I've been taking 10/325's for 4 years. I took half of a 40mg oxy a couple months ago and I was absolutely rocked. Never again. Be careful.

I take perks & my pain doc also gives me 40 mg oxcee. They are time release so you only get so much over a period of about 8 hrs. The Roxi are immediate release & that is totally putting 30 mg all at once. Same as the perks. It really depends on if you have taken them before. I kinda prefer the Percs because they work immediately. If you are having a lot of work you need to discus your options with your doc to figure out what will work best. Shen I had back surgery my spine doc switched me to the immediate release for a week after surgery because he thought the time release would not be strong enough. You have to be careful with any meds if you have never taken them before. I hope this helps . Good luck!!
