I was posting this in another thread but realized it probably belongs here. I get really bad migraines that last anywhere from a few hours to a few days (and one memorable and horrible one that lasted for 27 days). My doctor tried a bunch of things most of which did nothing to touch the pain. Tramodol and Floricet were two of them. Finally we tried perc 5/325 and that provides decent, if temporary, relief. I don't know alot about different meds. I was wondering if anyone else gets those kind of migraines and what medications help. Percs seem really hard to come by so other options would be good. I am thinking of trying pentazocine since it seems easy to come by. Any advice would be great. Thanks in advance.

I am very new to this. After researching for days during my last really bad migraine I came here. One of the vendors recommended seems good but alas no p's. I'm just so leary of sending money to strangers without some really good references.

Me thinks a doctor can easily prescribe an effective migraine med WITHOUT having to go through the 'blackmarket'. At least that's been my experience. No problems at all. And non-addictive.

I wish that were true and maybe it would be if I had insurance and months to make a trial and error approach. I tried to do it the correct way but months of trying things that aren't working is draining money with no result.

I'm sorry to hear that. Well, at least you tried. Sad our government spends more $$ on killing people, than on helping them.

It just frustrates the hell out of me.  I hear these people complaining about the DR's but honestly mine has tried so very, very hard to help me.  I feel bad for her as much as me when the newest approach fails.  We've done Imitrex, Prozac, Steroid therapy, Trams, Floricets, and a few other things I can't remember off the top of my head.  Everything is compounded by the fact that I get a lot of weird side effects from meds and I have a severe anxiety disorder.

I tried an appointment with a headache specialist/neurologist but she demands $200 dollars up front before each visit since I didn't have insurance.  That seemed a little pricey but hey, she IS a specialist.  So I paid.  Then I find out that each test she wants to do (3, total, the cheapest starting at 200 bucks and the most expensive going in at around 800) aren't included in the original fee, which was just for the office visit.  She wanted me to pay for all three up front before doing the tests and then another 200 for the appointment.  I walked out and went back to my GP.  She at least has always proved she has my best interests in mind and not just making as much money as she can out of me.

I don't qualify for any of the extreme measures (such as Botox injections) because you need to experience 50% headache days a month or something similar to get that prescribed.  Mine vary too much.  I can go one month with only two migraines and the next month spend most of it in pain.  Then the next three months be pretty well fine with just using Tylenol PMs to sleep it off before swinging back into a bad month.

New migraine just crashed into my skull like a piano landing on my head. Just got down with a round og puking. Littlr letters swimming in front of my eyes t ft ying to read phone. F*** this. Makes me want to drive a rsilroad spike into my eye to make Iy stop

I used to get severe migraines like you(puking, light sensitivity, my brain being sledge hammered for days, etc) but I luckily ended up seeing 1 of the best headache specialists in the nation about it. His advice was quit drinking pop, booze & crack drinks that I lived off of and only drink lots of water(I still cheat & have a crack bull occasionally). He said dehydration is 1 of the main causes in headache suffers. I didn't think it'd work but gave it a shot & since then I haven't had a single migraine in years. Still get occasional headaches but nothing a couple ex can't take care of. BTW, pk's always caused rebound headaches w/me. It may or may not work for everyone but it's worth a shot.

I already don't drink alcohol or soda....so thats a no go. God I hope its not cigarettes or I'm doomed. Rebound headaches are like mosquito bites compared to the migraines so they don't bother me much.

Cigarettes are sure to give me a migraine. The only effective med I found to get rid of a migraine was prescription only, and it was specifically for migraines. Gone on 10 minutes. But no matter how many Tylenol or Asprins I took, the migraine would never go away. I'm sorry but I don't remember the name of the migraine med, but I would imagine most of them contain the same ingredient. I got it from my doctor.

If the name happens to come to you let me know. The Immitrex family of meds gave me chest pain and really shortness of breath and my DR yanked me off them pretty quick.

And.......relief.

Hyd roxy zine first

Half hour later p e r c 7.5

Ate some pineapple

2nd p e r c 7.5

BLISSSSSSSSS

I really need to find a non opiod solution to these things.

Looking forward to trying SL's pen ta co zine to see what effect they'll have on them. Still a partial opiod agonist but weaker version and no Apap. Be nice if those work.

Yeah, it looks like mine are possibly from the "same family" that gave you chest pain. They are called Imigran (Sumatriptan). But for me, no bad side effects at all.

I was reading these posts on migraines and thought I could add my own experience...I've had migraines for years and they were never really under control until I didn't try to "break" the migraine with meds but instead tried to "prevent" the migraine. If you can find your triggers and eliminate them (ie food, stress, lack of sleep) that really helps. Read the book "Heal your headache", it can help you find a trigger. ALSO, prevention meds really helped me: amitrip or nortrip, topiramate as well as vitamin B2. Some people have luck with magnesium. Supplements like migrelief can help. I received a lot of help from a neurologist about prevention. The triptans as mentioned before I have for when I do get one. /default_smile.png

I wish I could just avoid triggers. Bright lights, loud noises and my anxiety attacks all kick off my migraines. The first one happens in any direct sunlight (I can also get sunburn in under 10 minutes) so my kids joke I'm a vampire. The second is impossible to avoid due to....well, the kids. The third can't be avoided cause I'm crazy.

My doctor did figure out my SSRIs were increasing them dramatically and since she switched me off them they are much less frequent. They went from 5-7 days a week to 1-3. The Tr@z@done she prescribed me as an antidepressant/sleep aid helps some but it's not helping my anxiety attacks at all. The meds like 1mm1trex I have horrible side effects with and she quickly stopped trying those since they affected my breathing.

Currently having one which is probably why I'm back in this topic. The pain is awful but the other symptoms just make it so much worse than if it was just a headache. They make me puke and make me dizzy. In the beginning everything starts to look and sound far away and I get disoriented.

My very first migraines cops found me wandering in the road lost and couldn't even tell them where I lived. Apparently I just parked my car and decided to walk home before getting lost and confused. At least most of the time that symptom is short lived and then the pain hits.

Blah. I hate these things so much.

At least my anxiety disorder and I have a somewhat working relationship but the migraines make it impossible to do anything but sit in the dark.

Sorry to hear you have migraines.  The only thing that has helped me in the past is ImmitraX and 5mg o*YC*Done.  There are some essential oils that can add to the mix that does amazing work for my migraines.

Essential Oils:

8 drops lavender with 4 drops of Roman Chamomile

The three work together and my migraine magically disappears.

I hope you feel better soon!
