Moving To Tor ...

I wanted to see if this would take off in discussion.

What about forums on Tor ? Or what about moving this to Tor? Do you think it would allow for more open discussion while protecting anonymity? Or is it all hogwash?

Mods are probably thinking "damn he just started and he already wants to move them forum". No, just thought it would make good food for thought. Does anyone use Tor at all or is familiar with it?

Actually, I find it to be an intelligent topic, particularly for your maiden voyage in thread creation. Anyway, the subject of Tor has been covered to some degree in various threads around the board, including it's strengths and weaknesses, but I don't recall having ever addressed the question of Tor forums, nor the idea of moving DBG to Tor as a hidden service. So, to address that idea, here are a few thoughts:

  • The base act of simply moving a forum like DBG to Tor does not guarantee greater anonymity and make more open discussion safer in and of itself. A recent story of LE's first confiscation of a BitCoin wallet from a Silk Road user as part of a sting operation on that site is proof of this. I suppose that having the forum on Tor would eliminate the need to use alternative spellings and terms for scheduled products, as search engine crawlers cannot, to my knowledge, index Tor. However, and as the saying goes, "Once more than one person knows about something, it's no longer a secret", and the application of that here is the fact that if LE were to learn of the site's location on Tor, we'd be no safer from unwanted prying eyes as we are now.
  • To take the first bullet point above a step further, the only way to truly secure a forum such as this, whether on Tor or otherwise, is to make it truly invitation only and 100% locked, meaning that absolutely nothing could be viewed by guests / non-members. All a visitor would see is a login screen and a logo, and that's it. If a small, exclusive private board is the objective, or if page views, member numbers and such don't matter to the owner of the site, then this would certainly be the safest and most secure way to go, but again, I don't know that hosting it through the Tor Network would be of any real benefit, as there are measures that can be taken to insure that the search engine crawlers do not index a traditionally hosted, locked, invitation only forum. Hooter can speak to this a bit better and in more technical depth than I can, but personally, I don't think that Tor adds much to the party here either in terms of board security.
  • It looks to me as though Tor is more valuable to individuals as a personal security and anonymity tool as opposed to a board hosting security tool, generally speaking anyway.
  • Despite Tor having a number of valuable features and benefits, it also has a few concerns associated with it, such as exit node issues, whereby your last stop while backing out of the network ends up viewing your IP address, giving them the ability, at least potentially, to log your IP and hence breach your anonymity. Again though, Hooter can expound upon this much more intelligently than I. Additionally, there's the simple matter of the Tor network speed, which can be painfully slow. Not that this is a major point of concern, but it does make for a somewhat frustrating user experience.

I'm sure that there are a number of other talking points on this concept, but those noted above are what first came to mind.....

Jewbacca,

Thanks for your relpy. I enjoy reading your posts and was hoping you would weigh in!

Unfortunately google was how I found this place. I like the invite only thing as it would solve this and the keep it off Tors slow network. Another thought would be an extension to the forum that was invite only.

I thought there were items in place to hide servers on tor? But then again, look who we are trying to hide from?

Anxious to hear from Hooter.

Why........Normally I would just assume, that this motive was simply based on reputation, and numbers, but I'm afraid I am a horribly honest person, and I do not think that is the case this time. You are unique, I will give you that, but something is odd.

Like 99 said, Intelligent enough........Ya know, once upon a time,  I had cercificates in special op interrogation, profiling, counterintelligence and countermeasures. Having said that, I have to be honest with ya brother, there is something different about you, don't know what it is, but, like you said yourself, here you are, but it seems, unlike many other new members, your motives are very unclear, and mostly contradictory.

OH and btw, I wouldn't touch tor with a 10' pole, I have tested the security at this site, (I will give NO details) but I assure you, it is VERY secure!!!  "The man does have people who can trace it right back to it's origin, but they are going to have to put some work into it, and my hope is that they focus more on the things that I am beginning to put in the political section, or some actualy feckin terrorism.   What hooter would like to see is the approval rate slow down quite a bit, untill the vendors can catch up, also I would LOVE to see a closed board. The only difference is that you would have to create an account and be signed in to see ANYTHING, unless Admin made a place, for validating people or people with under, say 30 posts,  to give the new crew a chance to visit THAT part of the board, and begin discussions with what we can call the Murphy Law section. This keeps the site off gOOg b*ng, etc.

AND even if it were a mostly closed site, there would exist a "public area" that may discuss automotive things, and the economy, so, traffic would still be driven to the site by the big boys.........

Fuckers are here every single day indexing the shit out of this place, ensuring it's eventual demise, unless admin already has a very large email list and a backup plan for the eventualy demise of this specific site, so that they may be invited, or notified of the backdoor.
A badge for you, my brother!

My motives are similar to others as the site name implies. I am also looking to meet people. That takes time.

I was curious to hear your response because I have read a lot here and knew you were an intelligent individual. I could see that you had some sort of technical involvement with the site it seemed and when Jewbacca responded that you would probably have a good response, I was anxious to hear it.

Telling you a little something about who I am without telling you who I am would be. I am an electrical engineer. I specialize in industrial automation. I love to write software and have a good time. Guess maybe this should be better in the introduction section though.

But back on topic.

Yeah at first thought I would think Tor would give users the ability to access the forum without the office it nazi's getting bent out of shape. But then again, there's proxies for that. But then again, there is a thread somewhere that said proxies are blocked. Which makes sense why you would do that in certain instances.

At first I thought it would be a good idea. Or, a good topic rather. But the more I think about it, the thread should have started "Moving underground" or something. A VIP section might draw less attention.

I got to get back to work. I might add to this later..lol. oh I like your avatar hooter

Just a nerd on the hunt, lol.

Now don't confuse me with those power distribution jockeys. I'm the guy you call if you wanna control your lawn sprinklers from your iphone. I did fireworks from my android phone two years back on the fourth of July. That was cool as hell and it fucking worked..Yeah!.. Neighbors love me btw.

But no history of writing computer worms that take out Iranian nuclear facilities. Maybe one day I'll be able to add that to my resume. I was instructed to remote in and shutdown a chicken nugget bagging machine once, lol. They didn't pay their bill, lol. Not quite as exciting though.

Apparently around 50% of Tor sites have been seized by the FBI. Tormail has been shut down, replaced with a reportedly fake maintenance site. Can post links if necessary

Interesting indeed, thank you for the update. Hey Hooter, what's Jewenberg's VP of Security and his "network" have in the way of intel on this?

that wouldn't be 2 good for me my PS3 system dosen't accept tor so id b nackered, and no i dont own a pc/laptop hate new technology i still have a fne you can by for 7 pound outa tesco's

just read that link, interesting altho they say #1 child porn #2 drugs they'll be doing the both of them at the same time no doubt

Yeah yeah they say............They say whatever may please the masses so they can pull any string they want. And what they want is control, do not fool yourself.

It's about control. Somwhere around here I have a post where "they" an independant auditor hired by the govt to check shit out because they were that confident that their shit didn't smell too bad, so they did did a probe into the (5 sided building whose name will not be mentioned) and found so much child porn that they simply closed the investigation. And that was not through tor, it was govt. servers.  Also Child porn has become very vague. With new laws being written all the time to define it.  Did you know that you could posses an image of a fully clothed under age person, of either gender, not doing anything sexual to anyone or anything else, just there, by themselves BUT if it meets certain "new" and almost constantly changing criteria, it is child porn, so that a bunch of shit. And the decision as to whether it is child porn or not is up to the discretion state attourney or districtattorney.  It's about control. Tor was becoming popular as one of the last bastions of private browsing, well fuck no, can't have that, gotta find a way to kill it. Hey lets focus on the horribly negligible child pron that I'm sure lurked in the shadows there, so lets broadcast that, it'll get the masses behind us, I mean we can't exactly call it, operation crushing what's left of your privacy, so they drop "buzz" words, like child porn, and drugs, it's ALL BULLSHIT!!!!

Has everyone forgotten about the binary newsgroups?  Guess what y'all, they are alive and well.  That's also how you can deduce that it's targeted toward the younger generation, the people who know nothing of the binaries, it's not their fault, they are just coming up during a time of smart "everythings" where ALL your shit is monitored. But younger people were beginning to learn about tor and how cool it was. Yep, time to fucking kill it.

Believe NOTHING you hear and only HALF of what you see.  *end rant*

Glad you understood that through all the typos, I type for shit with this keyboard to begin with, then I get a little excited sometimes. Anyway, it's nice to know I'm not he ONLY geek who remembers the binaries.

Google search reveals these:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Usenet_newsreaders

http://usenetreviewz.com/best-usenet-clients/

I would guess that you could still use outlook but remember all the yenc decrypters n all that. I'd only recommend it for text only based groups.  Also if I actually remembered how to set one up, in some aspects it is THE PERFECT way to conduct certain types of business. Totally free, totally anonymous, exists only in binary form until you decrypt the data.  The drawback, lack of control, either it private/invitation only or a free for all, and the MASSIVE amounts of spam with the free for alls.  Anyway, that's just my take on the bullshit backstory to get "control" of the tor network.
