Insulin is used whenever needed. It is used for a number of purposes and synergy with other PED's. A few of the things you want to use it for are to keep IGF-1 levels elevated and also to store syperphysiological amounts of macronutrients (carbs so muscles are super full, amino's to enhance recovery). The fuller you are the better your workouts will be (endurance, strength, pumps).

 
Good food pattern and customised supplement plan.

As for performance enhancing; look into nootropics (noopept is my fave). 

Phenylethylamine ( PEA ) is very good for mental wellbeing
