About 5 years ago I bought some generic valium. Now the 10 mg. tab feels like 5 mg. 3 years ago I bought some generic xanax. Now the 2 mg. bar feels like 1mg. I don't use them that often. What is the usual shelf life on these drugs before they start to lose their potency?

 
Only like a couple years man. And that's if they're well sealed. If you let benzos sit around for that long, you're lucky they did anything at all.

 
It depends how they are stored and at what point in their shelf life you got 'em but I would say 2 years. That's only a guess and it been commented by some that a lot of drugs last much longer than the expiration date. It's all a conspiracy with the drug companies.

I do think they last longer than the use by date but I would not use anything important like blood pressure of cancer drugs past their time.

The ones in blisters seem to have a few years.
