What's the soonest you can get new scripts from your PM doctor?

Hey everybody, I was just wondering what the minimum time period you have to wait before you can see your pain management doctor again? I heard it was 3 weeks but I am not sure. I need to go back eventually because all of the scripts need to be re-written. I can't fill new scripts with my insurance for 30 days, but I was wondering If I can see the doctor sometime before that and then fill one of them using cash instead of insurance. Anyway I need to go see him at least a few days before a full month has past before I've seen him because I would like to have new scripts before I run out of all my current medications. Thanks for the advice folks.

i would see my old doc before the month is up, but even without insurance you will not be able to fill your script before the 30 day mark.

I go in to see my pm doc every 4 weeks. They write out the prescription to last 28 days, so I go in that often. Try to make your appointment as close to the 30 days as you can. If you go into a pharmacy wanting to pay cash, they can still see if you have ins and refuse to fill the meds early for you. I could usually get mine a few days early, but not many, like 2 or 3. If the doc writes on the new script, may fill on (this date) I have been able to get things filled early.

I also make my next appt with my pm doc as I leave the office, so I know that I can get into my next appt before I run out of meds.

Hopefully this info has been useful.

Okay thanks for the advice. I thought that you can fill your prescription by paying in cash if went to a different pharmacy then the one you filled them with using your insurance. Is there a cross pharmacy database or something? I don't think there used to be because I remember a while back a friend of mine would go see this pm guy almost every 2 weeks and then use different pharmacies to fill the pills. Maybe that isn't possible. Anyway thanks for your responses. The last time I saw my doctor was on 7/30, so using my insurance I think I would have to wait until the 29th or 30th of this month to fill new scripts. The problem for me right now is that I took more than the suggested dose and ran out, foolishly. I kind of need these meds because I have this job which totally messes up my back. I was hoping that I can see the doctor again after tomorrow, but that would only be 3 weeks, and also I don't want to give the guy the impression that I'm going there too soon or taking too much medication. I guess I will just have to wait about a week to see him again and then try to fill them on those dates I mentioned. Thanks for the responses everybody.

If this was on of the first visits with this doctor, you could go in and let him know that the dosage you are on isn't quite enough to keep you functional. Especially if you recently started onto pain management. That has worked for me in the past, but can only do it maybe once or twice. I do know that if the doctor does write on the script, May fill on x/xx, that will override when the ins says you can fill ot again. I had gone to multiple pharmacys in the past also, but those days seem to be long gone. If you have a pm contract that says you can only get meds at 1 particular pharmacy, you could lose your doc if you fill somewhere else.

Another option would be to use a vendor that is approved thru this board to get some meds from so you can survive until your next pm appt. Just make sure to stick with the same meds your dr gives you just in case they do random ua's.

Best of luck with everything!

All pharmacies and doctors have access to the database so if you do try and pharmacy hop they will know and if you get stuff prescribed from someone else they will know too...

the wont know about vendors

Federal law allows a pharmacist to refill a prescription 2 days before your refill date.  However, this is up to the pharmacist.  If you know them it should not be a problem.  Hope this helps.

hey thanks again everybody for the advice. Yeah I just started seeing this pm guyat the end of last month. That was my first visit. And now that you mention it, they did make me sign some forms, one of the fields was to list the pharmacy you plan on using, but I left that blank because I didn't know where I would fill what he gave me in advance. They said it was fine. I didn't even think about why they asked that, perhaps you do have to fill your medications at the same pharmacy.. I'm not sure though. If I try telling him that the medicine he gave me didn't do the trick, he might be a little suspicious because he gave me two different narcotics and said try this one first but if it doesn't work try the other one, I ended up doing both at the same time. I don't know if he's going to be pissed off about that if I say it. But I was planning on telling him that only that combination worked for me. He only gave me tramadol and tylenol 3's. I was planning on asking him to give me tramadol and tylenol 4's on my next visit. I'm just worried if I try to go see him too soon he might be wondering why i need the new scripts so soon, because it will sound bad if I say I'm all out. Anyway yeah thanks guys for the advice. I think going with a vendor from here is a good idea. I've already found at least 2 places that can overnight stuff. The only bad part is the stuff is a tad expensive. I was debating whether to order something but I don't know I don't know if it's would be worth it, it might be better to just hold off for a week. Yeah I think trying to pharmacy hop would be a bad idea. I'm not sure how much those medications would cost out of pocket.

wow he is giving you short acting..

they dont like doing that these days...they rather give a long acting..

but thats my experience

Can you please elaborate on that? I don't know what you mean. Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

Also thanks whoudinii , sadminion. and matt for all your feedback. I think the only thing I can think of right now based on what you guys are saying, is that the only way for me to get any kind of script filled early would be to have him write me a script that was different than what I already had 3 weeks ago. Like if he gave me tylenol 4's instead of 3's. That should be fillable with my insurance if I already used it for tylenol 3's earlier this month correct? One other thing, When I was picking up my medication last time, the pharmacist was saying that I should try the Tylenol 3 first  (1pill 3X a day) and if that didn't work then move on to the tramadol. Is it possible that they might ask me for the leftover tylenol 3's if I say I found the tramadol worked best? I think I will end up telling my doctor that the tramadol alone didn't do the job, so I took it with the tylenol 3, but I'm also going to say that even that wasn't completely great so can I please get tylenol 4 this time. Anyways I think I'm going to hang tight for another week so I don't have this weird feeling in the back of my  mind like I'm going to the doctor too early. Oh yeah does anybody know how many different narcotic medications most insurance companies allow you to fill per month? I think the limit is 4 or 5? not sure on that. Thanks gentlemen.

I think by short acting sadminion was saying that it was a good thing because from what I understand most people prefer short acting. Hope that helped.

Okay I get what you are saying. Thanks a lot for the explanation. I think I should of been able to figure that out myself. I guess you guys are right now, I definitely prefer instant release over extended release meds.

My hubby and I both got something long acting and something short acting (4 breakthrough pain), if your doc is a decent sort u should have no prob asking for something stronger, docs know it takes a few months to find a happy medium, where u may still have some pain but it's tolerable.

I like both,,,,short acting is great when you feel like your dying...Long acting is good if you have a bit of patience and can wait it out...as it will last a bit longer and will in the end give you more relief...So its up to you which you prefer.

Mom & Pop pharmacies if you know them will let you slide a few times, say filling a 30 day script on the 25th day. Pharmacies are linked now so they will check to see what you've filled, on what day, and who was the prescribing Doctor. I just refill every 28 days to avoid problems, the only way to fill a prescription early if it's controlled I know of is to have your Dr prescribe a higher dose on the script your trying to fill. I think you can have your pharmacist call your Dr or vice versa if you need it early because you lost it or something. This will only work a couple times though and will annoy your prescribing Doctor. You can also have enough of a subsitute prescribed to make it till you fill your script. Like enough lor@zepam to be able to fill your alpr@zolam script
