UK people - this has to be read

I dunno, it's obviously a response to the few "legal highs " deaths that occurred over the past few years. I will follow the bill closely though,  I take an interest in what goes on in both chambers of the house. I have a feeling it will either be a load of shite, or actual fair decent legislation.

Did I say fair? Whoops lol

This is unreal, I've just read through the Bill, here it is

http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/bills/lbill/2015-2016/0002/16002.pdf

This is one of the most absurd acts of parliament I've ever known and it's making me really down and lose hope...it's 2015...this is not a backwards step, it's a massive leap back. I just want to ring the necks of these filthy piggy politicians. They care about us, hm, is this why they're doing it? I like the opening lines 'so and so finds that this bill conforms to human rights', it doesn't, it spits in its face.

Writing to my MP will do such little good, but I have to, this bill is disturbingly over the top.

Wow, that's a long and obtuse read and it pretty much included everything until I got to exceptions where they exclude alcohol, nicotine, and caffeine, which (excluding caffeine) probably account for more deaths than any of the other substances they seek to ban.

sorry to hear it mate, hard to believe they can just stop and search you at any time without a warrant even in a car. I know in the U.S. They violate laws a lot but I have refused to allow them to search my car and they actually let me go. They must have been in a hurry - most of the time they will bring drug dogs to see if they can detect something but I wonder how many substances besides weed, heroin, and coke, and meth they can detect.

It makes one wonder how far this can go, world wide. Glad I'm old enough that I won't be around to tolerate the Orwellian police states they are creating.

It almost makes me feel physically sick reading it, the hypocrisy and obvious violation of human rights. I'll fight it, there's a lot wrong with this country, it's fractured and eating itself away, and the government are instead focusing on, essentially, being in an altered state. This bill basically means that it's illegal to take *anything* apart from that bastard alcohol, I'm sure many people died from alcohol poisoning as it was announced.

There are people fighting it,, like David Nutt, he was sacked from the Advisory council for the 'misuse' of drugs for giving correct advise, now he is saying that this bill will massively hamper research into new drugs for treating mental illness, just like when the psychedelics were banned and they could not be researched for medical use.

I've got fight in me, but I don't know how much good that will be.

@Smoka90 - yea it's a serious mess. Let me know if there's anything I can do. I doubt it being from the U.S. but I'm up for trying to stop this nonsense.

The DEA over here is already f'ing with Dr.s and pain patients, it's just criminal in my mind. Seems like it's part of of a global war on drugs that they've already been losing for decades. Now they turn on the patients instead. Just plain criminal.

I don't know if there's much any of us can do, I feel helpless. Like I said, I'll write to my MP when the bill approaches, but it has broad support all over the commons, so it will get passed.

The absurdity is almost laughable, banning use of any substance with a psychoactive reaction...it's still really bothering me.

And I'm bloody scared too, to be honest. I'm scared of losing access to what I need to f*king live, on a daily basis, the thought of that terrifies the crap out of me. Yes, I'm with someone I love who will support me, but if I lose access to what I need I'm stuffed. And I know I'm not alone in this. However, this bill is slipping through with none of the attention that it needs.

So yeah, I'm scared, but this fear is pointless, as is the situation...none of us should live in fear of losing what we need to take...this takes us back to the basic debate on the 'war on drugs'. But if this absurd mentality spreads over Europe and/or North America, then we're going in the wrong direction for a generation or two.

There's no good points to get from this, I feel like rubbish.

Boo...

The world is moving too far to the right - like the 80s but worse. Politics, advertising, basic products increasing in price...

In the UK Labour made hc porn legal, strengthened Northern cities, got rid of the ban on 'video nasties', they certainly weren't perfect but this current lot don't understand how 'normal' people have to live. Their draconian view of drugs is ridiculous.

Alcohol/cigs kill over a hundred thousand in the UK, drugs - hundreds.

They have no clue, plus they make no tax off drugs...

I'd say the world is more left-wing than right. This is a (sometimes extremely) liberal society. It's astounding that there is still a draconian approach to drugs, when you consider the agenda the Western leaders have. Doesn't seem to fit.

It seems to be the one thing that politics is lagging behind on.

But it'd be daft to get drawn into a left or right argument, I guess...

Unrealistic, but it's actually real. Most cold medicine will be taken off the market along with a ton of OTC meds. I haven't read the bill nor am I in the UK, however is this a complete ban on these substances even for doctors to scribe them?

I read in the news recently people were stockpiling "legal high" products in anticipation of this bill, it won't be illegal to possess them.

That's absolutely absurd, is there any anarchy behavior going on in the community in GB?

No anarchy yet!

Yes, PTFC, people are definitely stockpiling. It's a no-brainer, the press and authorities seem somewhat surprised...

I think OTC stuff will be unaffected. Anything already under the Medicines Act won't be affected. But it really is a monstrous act. Instead of 'you can take something unless we ban it', it's 'you can't take anything unless we allow it', if that makes sense. A very worrying development.

And kratom. Yeah. Kratom will be affected. Yeah, that plant that keeps me and many others from spiralling too far down the op!ate path.

But it's been delayed, all sorts of problems, police concerned that they cannot enforce it, trouble defining 'psychoactive'. Idiots. They've realised what a mess the whole thing is. The Home Office have said it will come into force 'sometime in Spring', and they will give 21 days notice. How nice of them!

Only time will tell I assume, I just hope no anarchy will erupt - that's the last thing any country needs right now.

In my personal opinion they should leave it alone, it's statistically proven countries with strict drug policies have higher death rates and filling up the jails with people who use these drugs. They need to keep the jail cells open for the real criminals like theifs and what so forth, not the people who use drugs illegally generally use them because that's what they need but their doctor won't prescribe them what they need due to laws.

There's abusers out there and I'm fully against drug abuse, but if you need the drug for something specific I can understand that it's most likely a good thing for you which is a different story.

I'm in the US and this really ticks me off that the UK is doing this. There's so many good people in the UK that use drugs to assist them and you don't see but so many abusers there -- infact I believe there's more that take the meds for what they need, not to abuse. I know this won't change anything, none of this will but knowing it will be harder for people in the UK to get the medicine they need is heartbreaking and frustrating.

@VII, it's not so much medicines than "legal highs" you would purchase in a head shop or RC that are being affected.
