Whats the best free proxy available?

Good afternoon everyone. In light of some of the current developments over on the Mexican threads, I thought I'd address this security issue. Instead of starting a new topic, I thought I'd just post here, as it fits the subject content. In any event, as to John's question, I'm not particularly sold on any of the free proxy providers out there. There are any number of things to consider with regard to proxys and VPNs, not the least of whichy is their country of domicile, server location(s), etc. Personally, I would recommend Hide My Ass's ProVPN service, which is about as privacy and anonymity friendly as any commercial solution you'll find. The obvious drawback, as with most, is the lack of ability to pay in a truly anonymous fashion. That said, they are domiciled in a privacy friendly jurisdiction, and have a solid track record. There are a few private VPN / hosting solutions out there, primarily in Panama, that are 100% private and accept money order payments via the mail, etc., but I can't speak to their service quality or track record. Kind of a late reply but I have used http://ultrasurf.us/ and the good part is it can bypass a lot of companies firewall's as well. I use to use it at work all the time.

I seriously considered for a while weather I should post this because with less than ten posts I don't want to upset anybody unnecessarily but after taking everything under consideration I think that in the spirit of sharing knowledge no one would be upset with what is just information.

How did the Feds track down the alleged LulzSec member? It turns out that a VPN service reportedly used to mask his online identify and location was the one who handed over data to the FBI.

According to the federal indictment (embedded below), Kretsinger registered for a VPN account at HideMyAss.Com under the user name “recursionâ€. Following that, the indictment said that Kretsinger and other unknown conspirators conducted SQL injection attacks against Sony Pictures in attempt to extract confidential data.

“At a later date it came as no surprise to have received a court order asking for information relating to an account associated with some or all of the above cases,†they wrote in the post this morning. “As stated in our terms of service and privacy policy our service is not to be used for illegal activity, and as a legitimate company we will cooperate with law enforcement if we receive a court order (equivalent of a subpoena in the US).â€

I stated in a post about emails the best and easiest way I have personally found to keep my foot steps covered in to use the firefox extension Anonymox with the firefox web browser.

This extension gives you a choice of nine open proxies and four tor exit nodes with a few mouse clicks. It is really easy and about as safe as you can be without actually installing Tor. This is a very similar post (albiet a little more detailed) to the one I posted on the email discussion but the ability to use Tor mail, Tor itself and open proxies with very little effort is information worth sharing because that is how we (consumers of the internet) stay safe from unwanted prying eyes. We share the knowledge.

I hope I am not stepping on any toes, but honestly, until recently I used hidemyass as my primary proxy server also.

This is starting to sound interesting and scary at the same time. I guess most people don't realize how easy we can get hacked or tracked especially in this wireless world. I may seriously look into this. What about the shit I've been doing since I started computing? That’s stuff could be out there forever is someone already snatched it. Getting a proxy service now would not do anything about that right?
 
But I guess starting now is still better cause the hacking and spying is only going to get worse and more sophisticated anyway.

Unfortunately, the proverbial ship has sailed in terms of your past internet activity and anything that's out there online (pictures, posts such as these, documents, etc.), which is commonly known as one's "internet footprint". Even if you meticulously search and delete anything that might be out there, cached web pages live on in theoretical perpetuity, as do IP logs and the like on most all websites. That said, implementing a privacy plan now will help prevent further growth in your internet footprint, and will greatly enhance your privacy and security going forward.

Much to controrary belief, private VPS are still suspectable to packet sniffers and monitoring of your data. This is done in a similar method as is used by Static NAT, your private iPv4 address is masked from the outside by the router translating Private>Public.

The same applys to tunneled traffic, until your data is encapsulated from frame>bits on the wire it can be sniffed. Another point worth mentioning is that if your at work and part of a single Local Area Network, your security guys can sniff your data, capture it just and follow the stream - tunnel or no tunnel. Remberer these guys are part of the same LAN as yourself, the true purpose of a tunneled connection is to protect data from the outside and to maintain the integrity of the data from point to point.

There are methods to mask IPv4 sessions, but really today if a said person is determined to track you in the work place - they will have some extemely advanced software and skills to capture everything they need and you would not hve a clue.

Just be careful at work, esp if you work for larger company's. Theft of intelectual property through simple network sniffing is an extremely lucrative and underated threat to modern business. However they are catching on.

I monitor Cloud based storage for a handful of company's you will have heard off, have also written exploits for the main Pen-Testing framework used in networking security today.

Keep your browsing or research to out of office hours. A good proxy to use before you redirect to Google is this one :- http://anonymouse.org/cgi-bin/anon-snoop.cgi

I also use it (on a Windows Machine - no need on Linux,) with a F/Fox add-on anonymoX 1.0.2 - This adds yet another TL of security between you and the WAN.

Call me paranoid, just see how easy it is these days to gain info - all these people walking around with wi-fi turned on there smart phones. Hacking paradise, no doubt some will learn the hard way.

It is out there, and so easily found, pulled up and if need be used in extreme cases used in court to gain prosecution. Just do you utmost - delete your Google history, use a browser proxy and a web based proxy significantly masks your ID. Avoid using smart phones for anything finacial or concerning controlled substances, better safe in todays world. Your data = $$$$$$$ to the correct people.

A proxy server will take your outgoing traffic and redirect it, therefore giving the impression that your location is that of the geographic location of the said proxy your using. However this alone leaves a trace - you connecting to the proxy. If you can use a browser based proxy, this masks your IP address instantly when you open your browser, if you then connect to a Web based PS - it will not be able to detect your true location, this adds a little more security for you. Also it means if the hosting Co is asked to supply user data to anyone, your IP address is spoofed anyway.

EG - When I use a Web based PS and a browser plugin, my IP address appears as if I'm in the US, this is before using the 2nd Web based Proxy which alters my IP address further. Effectively your bouncing your signal around as much as possible to make the true source IP address untraceable.

You can run IE or Firefox from a DOS prompt by typing:-

"%ProgramFiles%Internet Exploreriexplorer.exe"

Or for FFox or IE

cd program filesmozilla firefox

type firefox or internet explorer to launch the browser

Or to open your default browser to a desired webpage:-

start "" "http://drugbuyersguide.com"

All the above is assuming that the programs are indeed installed in the default locations, if not I would navigate to the working dir and launch from there. Ideally you would like to use - start "" "http://anonymouse.or.../anon-snoop.cgi"

This would open your default browser using the proxy server. Then browse in privacy /default_ph34r.png

Although they claim the local ISP still knows what you're doing as far as file sharing, even when using Peerblock, I haven't received a warning about downloading copyrighted material since using it several years ago.

Most people who are part of the file sharing community already know about peerblock, but they suggest other ways of hiding your activity including using encrypted VPN services, which unfortunately are not free. Because they are in the business of helping people keep their web activity unknown to others I can only guess they know the best ways to do it and the best companies that offer such services.

Peerblock is a handy little program, it has a database of all web based tracking servers, searching for things like scavenger traffic, usual bounce traffic, typically this sort of traffic is generated if your connected to  peer2peer network - downloading films, music etc that are copyright protected.

What Peerblock does is update your browser to filter out all entries listed in Peerblocks database  - if you download without peerblock you IP is noted, nothing much really happens beyond that, although you do become a statistic.

Using peerblock is something I have made second nature using prior to connecting to any peer2peer network. That way your TCP/IP stack will not allow a socket to be created between your PC and any node on the peerblock blacklist. You usually find universities, advertising companies collate the data and sell it on to marketing companies, government dept's, film/music marketing are big buyers -  yada yada yada. Your cookies and browsing history = cash to the right companies.

Anyone downloading should be thinking about using this little gem.

Thats actually how they got caught though my man, they went a little overboard with the lulz, and trolling. I actually knew, well, had been acquainted with this and many other members of lulzsec, the inside secret is that they began to turn on each other based on ego, and this specific person got rolled on by members of, lets say a competing group.  btw just as an fyi, lulzsec itself is still very much alive and they now understand the importance of avoiding "infighting". Hidemyass is a good everyday VPN but if the FBI asks, they will roll in a heartbeat.
