I was diagnosed with depression when I was younger. And the therapy & antidepressants were tried over and over. I looked into a more natural fix and started taking a high dose of St Johns Wort. Believe it or not it worked pretty good at first but faded. Then I read about "Same" most say sammy. It's a natural substance your body makes but sold as a script overseas. It does lots of good stuff for the kidneys & joints but also helps depression. It boosts your seratonin. I worked my way up to a dosage that works for me and take it 2x a day. (400mg 2x) I felt better fairly fast & over a year later, I'm doing great. You must read up on it and you can't take it with other antidepressant drugs. It can be dangerous! Seratonin syndrome could result. Also, you have to taper it if you want to stop a larger dossage. For me it has done more then any script of Zoloft could. It also made my anxiety subside. I feel nice and calm. Having some pretty vivid dreams seems to be my only noticeable side effect. In the USA it's in any drugstore. Online from Vitacost an such is much cheaper. Try it if your courious. Research 1st though friends.

I've often wondered if Same and/or St Johns Wort really worked for depression! I'm so glad you are getting good results. I've battled chronic depression for years as well and have been on a slew of different meds. On Celexa now and it works well enough I suppose. The litmus test is I know when I'm NOT taking it.

My question about Same is side effects. How long have you been using it and do you have any side effects such as weight gain/loss or loss of libido?

It took me so long to get on the right dose of pills for my bipolar that im afraid to try anything new. Every time I do I end up having a massive reaction but from what I just read on this stuff it seams like a good thing. Its be known to help oyher things as well.

SAMe is used for depression, anxiety, heart disease, fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis, bursitis, tendonitis, chronic lower back pain, dementia, Alzheimer's disease, slowing the aging process, chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), improving intellectual performance, liver disease, and Parkinson's disease. It is also used for attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury, seizures, migraine headache, and lead poisoning.

Hey Roger. Aside from the vivid dreams, which some seem peculiar, I don't have any other side effects. I did notice having more endurance during exercise. Everyone's different though. I started taking 200mg 1x a day when I started. (about 14 months ago) I bumped it up to my current dossage 400mg 2x a day in about 2 months. Kinda like you bump up other Rx for depression. Oh, & the libido is fine & the weight never changed. I run 4 days a week though. Cheers. :D

That is so interesting! Do you mind me asking how severe you would describe your depression? I would say mine as chronic and moderate. I would love to switch to something more natural. I don't have particularly bad side effects other than loss of libido and like you I exercise. Celexa is known for weight gain (or so I'm told by my doc) but that hasn't bothered me at all.

I found pristiq to be the most effective antidepressant I've ever used but it is frightfully expensive..... $250+ per month even with good insurance.

Thx for this info. Gives me something to consider.

My depression was always chronic since a teen moderate to severe. I got panic attacks frequently too. Worse one was on the ferry MH bound. I freaked out and paced the decks for 20 min until reaching the city. The boost exercise gave me always helped somewhat. Guess that's why I'm hooked on that. I get Jarrows Formula 200mg in blisters. 2 boxes of 60 per mo cost about $50.- with shipping. Vitacost, Vitamin Life, & Lucky Vitamin carry them online. My IOP's for them if you will.
