A Reminder To Delete

This one is basically common sense IMO, as well as one of the most simple, but often overlooked security measures.  From time to time, delete messages from whichever email account(s) you use to conduct "business" on.  Especially those which may have your name, shipping address and such in them.  Delete your inbox, sent, & junk folders.  And then most importantly.. DON'T FORGET TO EMPTY YOUR TRASH FOLDER.

FEDS VIEW PRIVATE EMAILS OVER 180 DAYS OLD AS 'ABANDONED' ALLOWING POLICE SEARCHES WITHOUT ANY JUDICIAL OVERVIEW

Most things have changed for the better since the Pony Express delivered fast mail, but at least back in the day the mail delivery system was safe from the prying eyes of the Government if not from an occasional robbery.  Defense attorneys are concerned to find that under antiquated Federal laws our email and internet privacy rights are not protected from Government inspection and intrusion.

Under the Electronic Communications Privacy Act of 1986 emails older than 180 days are not protected from Government intrusion because the email is considered abandoned. Once emails are considered abandoned any law enforcement agency can gain access to personal emails with a mere subpoena.

There is no requirement for law enforcement agencies to obtain search warrants for any emails over 180 days old stored on an internet server nor stored in the cloud. Therefore there's no Judicial oversight over investigators who may abuse their subpoena power with impunity.

This is indeed a very significant area of concern among privacy rights advocates and legal professionals, and I encourage everyone to be diligent in reviewing and implementing the best practices outlined by Heisenberg and Hooter. These guys know their sh*t, to be blunt, and ANY messages left on an email server in excess of 180 days are indeed fair game, should prying eyes ever pay you a visit. In fact, this was the cover story on a recent issue of a leading legal industry periodical.

Great thread, guys.

I went and took care of business.

I would only add that if anyone is using any proxy's, creative routing, remote access that you delete any traces you can as a matter of practice.

Has anyone come up with a solution for the trailing proxy entry?

Thanks for always providing us with information to keep us all safe.

I typically do delete old conversations, as I've had ex spouses threaten to cause trouble during divorce. Not fun.

Always try to keep a clean mailbox now. But a reminder is always welcome.

I just want to add that you can actually follow a topic so you get the red notifications when you sign in, but not get emails.  Just play with your cntls

That sounds good, unfortunately when you delete ANYTHING on your computer, it Really isn't going to go away, unless you use the right software, or change out your hard drive..I worked in IT for years, and have a couple friends who work in computer forensics..(Even than, Google Tracks more than you think)

The only way you can truly protect yourself is by using PGP to encrypt all of your e-mails, even just e-mails regarding questions but especially e-mails in which you are sending shipping information. Unfortunately, not a lot of vendors will be able to decrypt the PGP on there end. Second best way would be an overseas service such as securenym or countermail and only use that e-mail to conduct business. You could even take that one a step further and only use your countermail (or other anonymous e-mail service) account from internet cafe's.

Yea I deleted a few Addys that were full of junk for a few years. They just built up. Now I say F Google and have a paid Countermail and

SMnet I now use for only Vendors ..I am thinking of being more secure from here on out.

Thanks for the info, definitely best practices here.  Something a lot don't think about, and even though I knew I was being lax and this kicked me into gear with cleaning house a little.

Gah.... I don't think I have deleted any emails other than junk in my most used email account. I will get on that. I guess I am too naive when it comes to these things, because I can't for the life of me figure why someone would want to gain access to my web world.

I’d imagine it’s easier on @Admin than having to check the shout box every day or so.
