Beta Blocker (Propranolol)

I'm afraid to try these. I have very low blood pressure and I'm afraid my heart wouldn't like them. I'm always looking for treatment options however for my anxiety disorder. Anyone with really low BP ever get put on these?

I've tried Propranolol.. It has been one of the myriad of meds my doctor has tried me on... I am technically within the normal category when it comes to BP... However, something about them didn't quite agree with me...

I could definitely feel their effects and it does help with the physical signs of anxiety and panic...

However, my anxiety & panic come straight from my thoughts, so I was in an odd state of 'head going mental, yet body and motions slightly more controlled'.. Which just left me even more confused really and kind of negated my (very limited amount of) learned coping techniques... In fact, I found the whole experience quite unnerving..

However, I am sure for those folks whose anxiety starts as a physical manifestation, they are quite invaluable and may actually prevent a full blown panic attack...

wp, these type of drugs are used to lower BP and sometimes heart rate. So make sure you talk to PCP very seriously about these.

Some beta blockers don't stop your heart dead but slow down the activity. They have been used by entertainers and people who need calming down before going in front of people.

Again talk to your Doc but it sounds like you should not use this type of drug.

If you need to raise your BP do a few rails(kidding).

Yeah. Probably why she's never discussed this option with me. Like P though mine is mostly in my head though when I get anxious I start shaking. Would be nice not to do that in social situations.

I remember being put on these when I was an anxious little kid, might have only been 13/14, something like that.

My anxiety used to materialise itself in wanting to pee every 15 minutes badly, and they didn't really help with that...beta blockers are a nice idea, but to me anxiety does its worst in your head, psychologically, which is part of it that these tablets don't touch.

Don't plan on using them in the future...

Just want to post my experience with Propranolol here. I recently got 40 m g from a vendor, specifically to use for when I have to give big presentations. Im in grad school, and sometimes we have to get up in front of the department and talk about our shit. I always ruin it becuase i'm a big wreck of a mess of a anxiety stressball.

So - being oh so smart - I decided to pop one 40mg the morning of my presentation. I tried it for the first time. Luckily, I had to speak about 45 minutes after taking it, and it hadn't reached 'full effect.' But i was definitely feeling a little ....sloshy....

But once i got up to the podium, I totally leveled out. Normally, my BP and HR go through the roof, but none of that. I was perfecly calm. No sweats, no getting all flustered. I was amazed that controlling my physiology could be so perfect. I can't take the normal relaxers...benzos, etc...because they make me foggy and when i'm doing presentations they just really fuck me up more.

So, it did what I needed.

However .....

About 2 hours after ingesting, I felt really WEIRD and not functional. My legs and arms felt like they weighed 300 pounds a piece, and I was so SLLOOOOOWWW .....Plus I had to go to the bathroom a lot... that was unpleasant. I ended up sleeping like 16 hours straight !! /default_blink.gif :blink2: /default_blink.gif And i still felt a little weird the next day.

Researching online, discovered a more appropriate dose would be about 10mg. So ....learned that the hard way. Like the ability of Propranolol to completely eliminate all physiological effects/signs of anxiety.
