Beta Blockers can be dangerous, be careful with this substance!

I want to share an experience I had while I was experimenting with Beta Blockers that wound up putting me in the hospital for 4 days. I think I got the idea that Beta Blockers could be used off label to treat anxiety from watching an episode of House. Sure enough I looked it up and read on Wikipedia that Beta Blockers are sometimes used off label for anxiety/stage-fright. The real purpose of Beta Blockers is to treat people who have high blood pressure. Beta Blockers lower your blood pressure. Me being pretty much an idiot decided to give this a try when I realized by mom had a bottle of Atenolol (a beta blocker to treat high blood pressure) in her medicine cabinet. I was thinking that maybe it would have a benzo effect like cl0nazepam or zanax, and would ease my anxiety. The problem was I was also taking 100mg phen0barbital pills that I procured from an online source in an attempt to self medicate and treat my insomnia. I took one Beta Blocker at night before bed and didn't really feel anything unusual, but I also either took phen0barbitals during that same day or a day before, i don't quite remember, but I do know that Phen0barbital has a long half-life and stays in your system for a while. The following day I decided to give the Beta Blocker another go. This time I took one as I was on my way out of the house to do some grocery shopping. What happened next was one of the worst experiences of my life. My memory of what happened after I went out is really shady even today, I vaguely remember walking the streets in my area, but the next thing I knew, I woke up in a hospital room completely disorientated, not knowing where I was or how I even got there. The hospital called my mom and she was there when I woke up, which was like 2 days later after I left to do the grocery shopping. Apparently I was asleep or in a coma for 2 days straight. When I finally woke up it was the strangest feeling, it was kind of like being born into the world for the first time. I had no idea where I was. I later learned that while I was out I went to a burger king and at some point fainted and was pretty much out cold in the store lying face down. I don't remember any of that and somehow I managed not to mangle my face when it hit the ground because I didn't have any facial bruises or lacerations. But after i came too and realized what had happened I tried to get out of the hospital bed an leave but nurses restrained me. I was in an out of consciousness for a day or two after first waking up and slowly regained my strength. But by the time I was able go to the bathroom on my own I ended up collapsing once I got near the toilet. It was quite an embarrassing situation, but i was so dazed that I wasn't really feeling too embarrassed. I guess my motor functions were weak at that point because I was in bed for so long. It took me another day or two to be able to finally check out from the hospital and go home. But not before the Hospital psychiatrist paid me a visit and asked me if I was suicidal. I said no but honestly I may have been. I couldn't open up to the psychiatrist because my mother was in the room and I didn't want her to know what was going on with me. I told the psychiatrist I was just trying to get high and not suicidal and that what happened was an accident. I really didn't intend to kill myself but this was a very dark time in my life where I really didn't feel too enthusiastic about life in general. I basically said what I needed to say just to get out of there and let my mom get back home and not worry about me. They asked me if I was in any rehab program and I told them that I was, but I stopped going and they told me to go back to it. I said I would but I never did. That was the last time I experimented with any substances for which I had no idea what effects it would have or how it would interact with any other meds in my system. I've been super careful since then to not mess with anything that I had no experience with. The last thing I needed was another trip to the hospital and my mom worrying about me. Also I'm glad I don't remember the part where i fainted but I thought about it later and that must of freaked the other customers out. So I felt a little ashamed that this happened to me and that I may have possibly traumatized others who witnessed this. Also I remember having $300 in my wallet when I left the house before I passed out, because I just got money back from a tax return, but when I checked out of the hospital and put my clothes back on, I only had $40 in my wallet. I think one of the EMTs must of taken some of my money, which is not surprising considering the area where I live in. It could of been a nurse or someone else, I have no way of knowing because I was unconscious for a couple of days. I figure it was someone who worked at the hospital because if it was someone off the street why would they leave $40? My thinking was whoever took it had some mercy on me and left me enough money so I could take a cab home form the hospital.

I honestly don't know if this was from the Beta blocker alone or if it was from an interaction with the phenobarbital in my system. They did a tox screen on me and they found barbiturates and beta blockers in my system. So word of advice be careful using Beta Blockers for off label use unless you really know what you are doing. I for one will never touch that stuff again unless a doctor prescribes it to me if I have high blood pressure some day in the future.

Kurt thanks so much for this information........

I just went to my psych today and my anxiety has been through the roof.  turns out my bp was 210/130.  they wanted to admit me but i said no.  we were really arguing about it.  he finally, after spending an hour with him he put me on attenolol.  I was near stroking out.  He really really wanted to admit me.  I just cant right now.

The info you posted has been very informational for me and was a great way to start my research, since I have never been on a beta blocker before.  he told me to double up on my vals today and if I feel various symptoms I am to call an ambulance immediately.  I love my doc he really cares.  any way before I went on the WWW i checked here, and here you were.  Thanks again, that is a valuable contribution for the forum.

wow kurt that is a pretty scary story, thank you for sharing. Can I ask how much beta blocker you were taking? I have had anxiety my whole life, and also diagnosed with tachycardia (rapid heart rate, my resting rate was around 100 or higher). Its not dangerous in itself, but it is uncomfortable with the palpitations. I asked my doc if anything would help and he gave me propranolol to use, 10mg twice daily. He said larger doses were used to control blood pressure, but a smaller dose should keep my heart rate from getting too high. It works, but does nothing for my anxiety, except for removing racing heartbeat as a symptom. If I miss my doses for a day or two I start feeling palpitations again. So for me its been a good thing. But I'm sorry to hear about your horrible experience, but its good to hear the good and bad when considering any med. I hope you are feeling better!

sorry you're feeling anxious cat and I hope the attenolol works out for you!

I was given some of these by a "friend" in high school and took a few on top of a lot of booze & large dose of coke. I think it was the latter that probably saved me because it increased my blood pressure although I did have a major meltdown, picked fights with a few random people, & caused a 3rd of my high school class to never talk to me again. Certainly one of the worst nights of my life & I had a few pretty bad ones back then.

Thanks for sharing this Bite me. I bet that coke did save you and thank God it did.  But now you are here, and even though I was on "break" when you joined I have noticed you to be a good member and a QUALITY member.

You know, They say that you cannot "feel" high blood pressure. i def knew there was something wrong.  I am more comfortable and even tho I am in a very stressful situation in my personal life i am more comfortable.  I do have to do some research on kratom mixed with BBs cuz that is all I take is kratom.  plus my scripts for lexapro and valium.  i also am an "on and off" drinker and my bf nearly killed me when I went to get vodka at the store.  he has heard stories about bbs mixed with alcohol and doesnt want me to die.  i get it.  he poured all of the vodka out.  so, no more alcohol and I think it is worth it.

Foxglove, I appreciate your support and very kind words.  I feel it is helping me.  they say it can take a couple weeks to have a full effect and I have only been on it since Tuesday.

It's easy to forget how dangerous alcohol is since the powers that be make it more easily available than safer drugs. I'm happy I haven't touched that one in 29 years. And my doctor has been on irbesartan for my blood pressure, which I tolerate pretty well.

Interesting story ...

I was prescribed these for anxiety but never took them much as thought well if im taking Benzos surely these wont help..One day i was in a bad way and took allot of them at night it was like i was having an out of body experience was all very weird and hard to explain ..I thought i was a goner so decided to get out of bed until most of the effects worse of .Never touched them since

Yes, I agree they are dangerous.

There are two kinds: one that is a single dose and goes up to 40 mg. And one that is called SA and stays in your system building up.

I have put on both kinds - and the same thing happened to me: I was admited to the hospital. With the SA version I gained 15 pounds, couldn't stay asleep at the wheel and was depressed.

I agree with you.

On the other hand those with hypertension these are a wonder drug.

During a brief stint of anxiety and panic attacks propanolol was effective. I went as high as 120mg a day but for only a brief period.
A small dose of 10mg a day has been proven to be very effective to help avoid  potential cardiac and stroke issues with those predetermined.

To control BP I would rather use hawthorn berry, hibiscus and celery as a first port of call but wouldnt outrule a small dose of a beta blocker.
For those using high doses of PED's it is definitely advisable.

I have a lot of experiance with beta blockers Metroprolol is one .I have given it for years and it will work on blood pressures for a short time but after about 2 hours it will go back up. Beta blockers are primarily for Heart Rate control if I don't take mine 200mg SR everyday I am feeling like i am dying.Hr without 120's on 70's. People prone for heart attacks or has had one will most likely be put on one because it helps save heart tissue.

I don't think there's a problem with beta blockers if you take them as prescribed, whether for BP issues or anxiety. I had a doc prescribe propranolol low dose to deal with symptoms of anxiety. They don't actually reduce the amount of anxiety you have, they just mask the symptoms, like sweaty or shaky palms, hyperventilating, racing heart, etc. They work great when I have to give a presentation or lecture that I'm nervous about. For me, the anxiety isn't crippling, it's the appearance of being nervous that I want to avoid without clouding my mind with benzos. Beta blockers work wonderfully for that. I take them as prescribed and don't mix with anything else that could lower blood pressure. No problems here.

Ive used propanolol sparingly but successfully for high bp on cycle before.  Cheap,  works great

I have used propranolol for 6 years, since I was diagnosed with GPA/Wegeners and my heart rate was 110-130 normal yet bp was fine. It helps me greatly and I have yet to notice any adverse affects but I’m only on 40mg a day. None of the cardiology team can explain the high heart rate accept for saying it must be the disease. My heart structure and stricture is fine but I have left sided deviation, whatever that means ? I am careful with other meds alongside though

You got to be careful with anything that is classified as a a "Depressant" and Mixing them together. That being said these are Prescribed for Anxiety and High Blood Pressure typically.

I tend to just tough things out but this was this was the worst i have ever felt. I got prescribed propranolol along with my ambien for my insomnia and i'll tell ya that stuff was poison on me. I needed it badly during the day and felt depressed/suicidal when off it and my body was dependant on it after 2 days of being on a low dose. WHne not on it blood sugar levels were really high and sometimes i'd feel like i was going to have a heart attack. Be very careful with this stuff.
