Bizarre Drug Test Result

I had been seeing my family physician for over 3 years for my pain management. He was the best doc ever, no drug tests and managed my pain with pretty much whatever I needed, within reason. In 2012 he began drug testing. Apparently my first DT came back NEGATIVE for oxycodone-- but I was never told. 5 months later he took another urine sample, and it ALSO came back negative. I was dropped from pain treatment after the 2nd test. Now, this is strange because not only was I taking oxy every day--what he prescribed me plus more--but I also took a home test before going in to make sure my sample looked good and had no "toxins," and it came up perfect: positive for oxy, negative everything else.

How is this possible?? How can your urine screen come back negative for oxycodone when you've been taking it everyday for 4 years?

KanMan, what a drag, I am sorry. IMHO, just goes to show (again) how very unreliable drug tests can be, given the many variables: individual metabolism/chemistry, lazy or distracted or just not real bright lab techs, various contaminants that can waft in unseen, different assays or tests that continue to be used even though they've been proven wildly unreliable, ETC. (A lab tech friend of mine has always insisted that urine-testing is flawed on its face, and if these folks were really serious about their fact-finding, they'd do fecal testing. I say, good God, don't give 'em any ideas!

How in the hell did we get to the point where so many people think it is A-OK to be forced to turn over their bodily fluids in order to get a job, medical treatment, whatever...

Kanman, that sounds like complete BS coming from a family physician. Doctor's are getting serious heat these days for what they prescribe.  I would bypass the family physician, and get enrolled in PM clinic....

I take 350mgs of mdone & recently had a UA come back bzos only. It was tested twice, but an oral swab, came up +_ for the mdone. So I have heard the error rates depending on the specifics of thbe test can range up to 25% false +'s etc. Or the more specific opy tests can come up w/ the wrong opy because of the difference of each persons metabolism. Opiated-

yellowbelly- I've been having a nearly impossible task of finding a pain management doctor in the metro Atlanta area that will just continue the regiment of meds my PCP had me on for 3 years. And I have very sufficient imaging. My spine is a disaster due to a brutal car accident years ago. I was suggested 3 surgeries that I opted not to have. They just look at you and say "You're too young to be on pain medication." (I'm 33) As if I had any control over what happened in that car accident.

Hi @KanMan,

I'm sorry to hear about what happened to you, but I'm a little confused. My understanding of the UA process is that first a cheap screening is done in office with a dip stick or similar to see if any substances come back positive in various categories - usually a 10-panel test. These are sometimes unreliable. Should a positive show up, the sample is them sent to a lab where a GS/MS test is performed to confirm the presence of the substance. This is supposed to be reliable for compliance testing. Is this what happened to you? Was your sample ever sent to a SAMHSA-certified lab? Or was this just an in office screen?

I never specifically asked if it was gas spectrometer tested; the doctor said it was sent off somewhere. that's what confuses me. a real lab test should have shown an oxymorphone

byproduct regardless of the dipstick test. I mean, I've been taking oxycodone daily for almost 5 years. it doesn't seem possible that it could've shown up negative on either test. Especially considering I preformed a home test both mornings before my appointments in which I was screened because I had smoked about a month before, and they came back perfect: positive for oxycodone and negative for all other substances. it really makes me wonder.

This almost sounds like a chain of custody issue; who knows. It's important to get this straightened out tho. I would ask which lab they use and what testing methods they use. I understand it's extremely unusual for a mass spectrometer to make a mistake if properly tested. Once you get the name of the lab I'd go online and see what they do, services they offer and look at a sample report. Then go Back to your doctor and confront him. Here's an idea of what I'm talking about http://millenniumlabs.com/practice-resources/testing-methods/

I have heard stories of lab workers who also partake sometimes will mark dirty UA as a Clean one. They know what the tests are for and they do a nice thing for someone.

My only conclusion is that the samples were somehow mishandled, tainted or lab error. But it happened twice. It almost makes me wonder if it was a fabricated result-- a phony test; because when my family's practitioner of 4 years who had a great relationship with us called to tell me he was cutting me off, he kind of insinuated that the senior doctor of the practice wasn't comfortable with pain management anymore.

Either the sample was mishandled your your dr was trying to dump PM patients. It definitely sounds sketchy. I'd try to find some solid answers.

I should have demanded a gas spectrometer test from an independent lab when it happened. but I was just in a state of shock. so now all I can do is find a new doc. these "pain intervention" places are a joke.

Hope you find one. I know it sucks to be in legitimate pain and not have many options.

Afrin makes you test positive for meth.

Nexium and Prevacid make you test positive for weed.  Other antacids as well.

And yes, with urine tests, poppy seeds do give a positive, depending how well they are washed.  This is all on the Mayo Clinic website.  hope this helps someone.

Well it helps me as I take nexus and at a recent ER visit tested positive. It did not matter what I said or the fact that my grandmother has been on the board of that hospital for 40 years now. I think it will make a difference now! Thanks Cat....
