Comparing 2 different (m.d.)-p(I)hp mags

Within the last two months i got 2 mags of M.D. -- PI -- HP from two different vendors. One was a beige-white, crystaline p.owd.er (not needles but chunkier crystals). It read from a bubble as expected. The other one was purple-ish, flour-like and clumpy. A harder to work with mag but similar results. Can anyone clarify? Freebase vs. .hcl? Two different mags?
