How common is it to get prescribed gabapentin for anxiety?

I have an appointment with my GP for my anxiety. They’ve tried two different anti depressants but neither worked for me. Would it be weird of me to bring it up?

I think it fairly easy to get prescribed depnding on your doc.   It is scheduled in kentucky and michigan which could increase the challenge there.  Most docs do seem to be unaware that it is used recreationally.  Maybe it hasn't caught on so much.  There are psychs/docs who are sketched by any request as if the patient is automatically drug seeking.  My last psych was sketched i asked to switch from depakote to lamictal and made me get a drug test for fucks sake!  Thankfully my current one isn't.  I got prescribed it after asking for it, tho i stopped taking it and started taking lyrica on and off which is considerably more effective imo and helps tremendously with other addiction issues.  I havent asked to officially switch to lyrica tho so i am taking that one off books.  Have to wait a while to ask lol.  Update us with how it goes!

 
@DoomKitty how is Gabapentin used for fun?  I have 100's of tablets & just don't get it.  Share your secrets Dooms!

 
@mountaincat9 Here's the recommended way:  Take one 300mg every 30-40 minutes WITH seltzer water until you got the vibe you want.  The seltzer is essential.   Eating a fatty meal prior also aids metabolism.   Usually 900-1800mg total but im sure folks do heaps higher.  Feels like a wonky drunk a bit with like a vice around the head warm feel.  Also people do that a lot in conjunction with opis to intensify the general high feel.  (Obvs poly-drug can be unsafe so proceed with caution!)

 
@DoomKitty.........thanks Dooms you've always got the 411.  I dig that about you.  Sounds like too much work for me lol so I think I'll let them pile up until I'm in the mood.

My problem is, I’m addicted to phenibut and I’m wanting to see if I can get switched over for gabapentin and follow doctors instructions instead of self medicating. Lyrica would work even better from what I’ve read. 
 

would it be better to make an appointment with a psychiatrist?

@Kooter Your GP will be able to prescribe both im sure.  And if you already have a good relationship with your GP then it will be easier to request to try something.  Rather than starting fresh at a new doc with "hi i have anxiety and would like gabapentin thanks".   Lyrica definitely works worlds better for anxiety in my experience.

Correct they put me on Gabapentin to get off Benzos. There is zero high, it not recreational. It does not ease anxiety. The whole point was to help the damaged gaba receptors in my brain to stop the seizures (14-20 MG Klonopin a day). So pass, IMO.  I stopped taking them and switched back, only because they didn't help in the slightest for 2 months off Benzos. It was hell, and no studies show it ever gets better. Unless you go to Russia, like Clinical Psychologist Jordan Peterson and are somehow cured. But, I highly doubt anyone has taken that much Klonopin per day and survived. Let alone, built a tolerance in 20 years to feel "normal". 

 
I went to my Dr yesterday and tried getting gabapentin without asking for it of course. I don't live in one of the 5 states it's a controlled substance. Yet he still didn't prescribe it based on abuse potential and he wants to run tests first. Thyroid and some other stuff. He said after the tests..he would prescribe it to me. 

Why does the Healthcare system suck so bad.

Update: went to a different doctor today that had good reviews and she was super friendly unlike the previous Dr. I told her my syndromes, anxiety, restless leg syndrome and insomnia and told her gabapentin worked for me before. She said she wants to put me long term on it if it helps and started with a 30 day script. 

There is hope. She was amazing and showed empathy.

I’ve been to treatment 4 times and I brought it with me twice and the first time the treatment place actually prescribed it to me

 
My shrink is gunna use that on me next before trying benzos for panic attacks i wanna skip this part it sounds like they dont help at alll

 
It helps with social anxiety.  Not all drugs help all people but to say it doesn’t work at all is not good.  It is a great drug for restless leg syndrome and social anxiety, makes me feel comfortable talking with people.  Wouldn’t say it makes me high but I do feel better.  It will make you sleepy.  Good luck.

 
My psychiatrist prescribed GABA 100mg a few years ago. Together, with any other psych med, WORKED GREAT!! Almost equaled BENZOs 💯

But at one point, I couldn’t poop for 6 day straight!!!!! Almost ending up in ER

So remember to drink lots of water, electrolytes, and FIBER. For me, seedless watermelon helps BIG TIME!!!

@DJGK drink a cup of something hot first thing in the morning. Don’t eat anything first, and try to stay in bed- if someone can bring you the hot liquid, even better. I use coffee. Back in the day I worked at a Cajun restaurant, and chicory coffee works well too.
 
I love the idea of something warm warm in the morning!

As long as I stay away from cups & cups of sugar, my digestion is AOK (with some daily probiotics)

@Gracie5 I used to love coffee; until I realized that I was putting 14 spoons of sugar into a 12oz cup of joe!!! [I was basically drinking “coffee-flavored sugar!!” With 20% of the cup being sugar :sick: ]

THEN I WOULD FALL ASLEEP AT WORK (as a Jr Project Mgr); BECAUSE OF MY SUGAR CRASH!!

Oh….. those were the good ol’ days!!!

PS…. I look NOTHING like my photo now… thanks to my overgrown PANDEMIC BEARD! Another reason why I miss the good ol’ days: I also had a full set of hair still!!! 🦱🦱🦱
 
You can get it prescribed on teledocs as long as your state doesn't have it listed.

Hey I have a vendor that sells Gabapentin if you are in the need?

I have had no problem getting it prescribed before for pain but I’m all banged up from a MVA

T @ Testisthebest: Even down here in Florida when the pill mill docs all switched over to Suboxone and/or retired you can still find some pretty liberal docs but you gotta know what to look for. Mine does "pain management, detox, anxiety,etc. And no insurance. My doc writes me 60 5mg Valium, 14 2mg Xanax and asked if I had ever tried adderal to get more focus at work as I told him I run my own business.

Like I dont tell my doctor anything about myself except what they need to know,...I was able to get my dr to rx the highest dose of adderall along with valiums ..... if they dont know your history or there is no history I would just come out and ask what is the reason for their mistreatment.... they have no problem billing your insurance or taking a payment for the visit
