I overheard a conversation at the gym last night (you really shouldn't talk where others can here you, but that's another conversation). A young guy was talking about how his pin site was red and possibly infected. He stated that he had poured isopropyl alcohol over his pin site before and the site was soaking wet, so he didn't know how he could of gotten an infection. There could of been many reasons to why he got an infection, but one of the reasons could of been that he didn't let the alcohol dry before pinning.Isopropyl alcohol is used for an antiseptic because of it's DRYING properties, not because the wet alcohol kills the germs. Bacteria and viruses are killed on skin when isopropyl is applied and then is dried. Isopropyl alcohol has a high evaporation rate and it is this drying property that actually kills the "germs". These microscopic, living creatures need water to survive (the water within their cells). When isopropyl alcohol is applied to the skin, it evaporates and actually sucks the moisture from the bacteria and kills the germs. There can be many reasons for PIP and infections, but letting your site dry completely should be a standard step. Sorry if this is "common knowledge", but make sure you swab your pin site and let it dry completely before you pin.
