Moneygram Problems

Hey kids, haven't posted in a while, but had an interesting experience last week while placing an order. I have used the same vendor and MG online for my purchases. Never had an issue, so late last week to place my order for overnight delivery. Got all the info together and put it all in, and of course I get the "due to high demand transaction may take more than 10 min". So I wait and wait and wait and keep checking to see if it went through, first I get the "we need more info" so I answer their dumb questions, and one of them was the color of my car, there were two possible correct answers and I must have picked the wrong one. So then I get "there was a problem, please call or email" you all know what I mean. So I email first, then find myself running to check my email every five minutes, and I still have life going on around me, so I call. The first person I get is very helpful, resets me so I can try again. Same issue, call again, this time I sit on hold for 15 min before I get someone this time, I am not kidding you, we go through a gambit of questions. Like have I ever owned land in this county, did I ever live on this street, so on and so on. After all of this, they say MG is not comfortable with the transaction and won't do it! I email the vendor and ask what should I do, get a use WU reply. Go online, fill out the info, and before I knew it, it tells me my money is sent! Of course, by the time I go through ALL of this, it's too late, so now I am waiting for a TN. MG was a pain in the ass to say the least! Ok enough griping, hopefully the rest will go smoothly, will post when it does!

It's best to do it the old fashion way in person.

I do it online all the time, and only had a problem one time. (They don't like it when you tell them it is none of their damn business why I am sending money. I learned that lesson quick...lol)  I pay with a debit card with an account online, and when I first started using MG, I always had to call in because they want to security screen you especially when sending funds to Mex. When I call in, They ask if the payment is for goods or services. The answer is always NO. Have you sent Money to this person before? Yes, many times. What is the nature for sending money? I am sending money for a deposit on a timeshare down in Mex, and have dealt with this person many times. Give them this line, and you should never have a problem sending funds again. Be nice to the person on the phone, and speak with confidence.  If you have an established online account, most of the time, they will just clear the payment without having to call in and go through the security screening. If you choose to take the chance and be anonymous, this method won't work. Just go to a MG or WU pay station, and pay cash..

Yeah I prefer in person and I actually like the red phone thing at some MG locations.. those work out pretty nice!! ALthough one time I had to call back 2 times to get the reciever info correct as I could not understand any of the people working on the other end.. strong accents... so that pissed me off.. or just the old fashion fill out the form and hand it to the clerk... that always works out nice and I never have had any problems... when I used to use WU I only tried online 1 time and was denied... this was 5+ years ago tho... I try to stay away from wu now days tho...

Yeah I got banned from MG today.  Looking for options.  What is X?

Does anyone know if MG at Walmart requires ID when sending funds? Is it only over a certain amount? Thanks!

So I'm answering my own question. According to Walmart, ID is only required on transactions over $850. Don't know if that's true for all locations, but it's what I was told.

Thanks good info!

My worst problem with MG was when using the red phone talking the person from india the name spelling was incorrect when paying at the store desk. Had to go back to red phone and try and correct spelling. They said I had to cancel the original order and they gave me a ref. number for my refund and then to resend back to the correct name with a complete new transaction. The girl at the desk said she could not do the refund that way because they don't carry that much cash so she had to call the manager down to finally get it taken care of after half hour. Finally get the correct name spelling and pay for the order leave store to go home and e-mail info to vendor. When I got home I did not have the ref. # of the new transaction on the receipt she gave me so had to go back to store again. I had only left the store ten min ago and she cold not find any of the receipts of the transaction I had just done. Had to get on the red phone again and try to get my ref. # so I could send funds. They tell me I have to go to a different location with a certified MG person to get ref. #. When I get to the new MG location they say they can not give me the ref.# and want the receivers phone number and they will need to call MG. I think the receiver may have been blocked. Luckily I was able to cancel the MG and get my money back and send to new receiver the next day. A few more problems like that and I could end up being blocked myself

Oh no, Vapor - so sorry to hear that - what happened with your situation?
Wow, this was so long ago, Dorothy.  Apologies for not replying to your question.  My niece disappeared and subsequently ~ 2 people were charged with kidnapping and murdering her...although, she hasn't been found.  So, I've not been around since then.  I've been doing a lot of reading and am shocked by some things I've read.

I realize this an older thread that was just revived, but seems like it's probably still relevant. I placed an order the other day and tried first to use WU because I had used them a few years ago several times when I moved and the local guy I had agreed to ship to me. I tried to use the website because I live/work on a mountain in the middle of nowhere and would not be able to make a trip to the nearest town until Sunday. Transaction was declined, no explanation given. I had never used MG but I went to the website, everything went great and then I got the message saying further info was needed to process. I called the number and got the full on interrogation from a Hispanic woman, including if I recognized a street I was associated with for less than a year last year when my husband was mobilized to an adjoining state (drill sergeant) and asked what city and county it was in. I answered all the questions very evenly with just a hint of incredulity, like "is this seriously necessary" but still politely. She asked if I knew the receiver. Yes. "What is the relationship?" Cousin. "What are the funds being sent for?" Personal gift. "Do you anticipate sending money to the receiver frequently?" Not particularly, but it is my cousin so... "Ok, thank you, I'll put your transaction through immediately!"

The short, not overly descriptive answers seemed to do the trick. I just figured that if I was sending money for a legit reason, I would have no reason to act really offended by the questions, just slightly inconvenienced, but also no urge to give tons of details, like I was trying to sound convincing. If she wanted more details, she could ask and I would gladly supply. I guess 8 years of acting and improv has done me well!

Question though. I know MG can decide to cut you off at any time really for whatever reason, but does it seem to be the case that after the first successful transaction, they back off a little? Or is this something to be expected every time?

It's something to be expected. It's too bad that you don't have access to going in person. No questions, no hassle. Depending on what vendor you are using, there can be alternatives to using WU/MG. You will have 20 posts in no time and then you can pm me for more in depth discussion.

Slowly but surely, 20 posts here I come! Going in person isn't entirely out of the question. I just have to time it properly so that I can combine it with a trip to the feed store or tractor supply, at the same time making sure my husband is too busy to come as well (we are employed by the same org. for his civilian job and are required to live on-site for both our positions so it can be hard to shake him sometimes!) The other challenge is in knowing when I've gotten receiver info and can actually transfer the money. Absolutely zero cell or data reception where we are. We have satellite internet in the house, so if I'm at the barn working, I get nothing until I get home. At least I have the option to go back to the house at pretty much anytime since it's literally 2 minutes away.

tried to send mg called got the 3rd degree then denied....paypal would be so much easier...frustrating...

I've been denied 3 times in two days. I'm going to have to use a fake name or something. I've got my name all over MG's stuff. I think I'm banned. All 3 times the ladies at ww said it was on hold. Gotta do something. Tried zoom once and didn't work.

This is a warning to all. I don't know if I can say "big box store names" - However, there is one big box store that you can put an app on your phone - all kinds of services -even  cash express services like MG. Well, I have been doing MG for YEARS but when I starting using that express app, on the third transaction I was blacklisted from MG. What are the odds?? Think about it! 2Earls, if I can give the store name, please let me know because something is fishy!! You can smell it a mile away! (Joking) There is more as in every story - but I will leave it at that.

Thank you to all of the moderators and the work that you all do. You all are a blessing in disguise - Thank you.
