My Options For Back Pain Treatment

@sciatic -  I appreciate all suggestions -- are you referring to a TENS unit?

I had physical therapy a few years ago on my back and bought one of the devices the therapist recommended.  It does help when I am using it, but I am not supposed to use it for long periods every day because the pads irritate my skin.  It does help when I use it, however.  It's a little difficult to get the pads in the right places on my own back, but since I am working at home, my husband can help with that.

The only other thing is I can't use it while I work on the computer -- once when I was working, a pad came loose, and there was an electrical arc -- it gave me such a shock and shorted out a few things (laptop, printer, lamp etc.) on the nearest circuit.  What my husband thinks may have happened is an electrical arc jumped from me to a nearby metal filing cabinet and caused the problem.  I was a little freaked out thinking I had fried the laptop and printer, but all I did was kill the UPS protector (it did its job well!).  This makes me leery of using the TENS while I work, unfortunately.

Yes, the TENS unit - I was thinking of getting one so thanks for the warning on the electrical arcing!!!

I agree with all the posts, I have so many problems with my back. I have tried almost everything. I did the shots in my back and I would be in so much pain afterwards maybe get relief for a day or so. I had a herniated disc to start with. I had surgery to fix that and the doctor messed up my back even worse. I have been to 3 Back Specialties and they all tell me the same thing for treatment my only option is using pain medications. I am on a long acting med and I take a different medicine for break-thru pain. I also have muscle relaxers, meds for anxiety, I take meds for nerve damage and sleeping pills. I am sure I am missing some. I don't want to scare you either but please GET a second opinion and if you can a 3rd. I leaned the hard way now I am stuck with messed up back it seems like forever and ever, not to mention that I am now terrified of any surgery. I have in both by arms now torn Rotator Cuffs and need to have surgery but I am so scared to death to have them fixed. I am just a mess! Also I almost forgot to say please Research the doctor as much as possible before you let him touch your back... I learned the hard way I found this all out afterwards when the damage had already been done. While sitting to my pain Management Office over hearing conversations from others waiting. They were talking about the same Doctor I had used that was why they were in the shape they were in there for. I hope the best for you sweetie and I know what you are going thru. You can reach out to me anytime if you want too. I could go on and on but just educate yourself as much as you can and take someone with you to your appt. it's hard to remember all the doctors say..

Thanks everyone for their support and ideas - please keep these coming!  /default_smile.png

This morning, I went to see the pain management doctor.  Wow was I nervous, but in the end, there was no reason to be. First, I went into the office, and the staff remembered my phone call from last week and wanted to "meet" me in person - she was so sweet!  It was like they were almost fighting over who was going to "get" to take care of me! /default_smile.png

Then, I had paperwork to fill out -- but I came prepared with my own records, and my husband set up to filling out all the papers for me and showed me where to sign, so that was easy, too!!

I had to take a urine test, and I was worried about that because I had a little Diet Coke before my visit so I wasn't completely fasting -- I felt silly when they explained they were having to screen for drugs because of my new state law, etc.  So they thought it was funny that I was worried about Diet Coke, but I wasn't sure if they were checking my blood sugar, and even Diet Coke can elevate it (esp. when I hadn't taken any of my blood sugar meds that morning).  They didn't watch or anything, it was very civil and private, and I sent my specimen through a cabinet pass-through right from the bathroom.

Another intake nurse interviewed me in the exam room, and she was super friendly.  She encouraged me to talk and give lots of details, which I did.  My husband also filled in the blanks when I wasn't sure about something.  She used a laptop to enter in my information, and she said she really appreciated that I came prepared with a list of my medications, conditions, drug allergies, etc. all ready printed out for her.  (I bring that to all my dr appointments, to every dr., every time I am seen.)

I only had to wait a few minutes after the nurse left before the doctor returned, with the same nurse. He was super handsome, almost dazzlingly so.  I had to remember not to be shy, LOL!!  He shook my hand, and he interviewed me and my husband. He also examined me, and although it hurt, I could tell he was trying to be gentle.  We talked about options at this point, and he thought an epidural would be a good next step.  I asked him about how much it would hurt, because when I called my insurance company to ask about my coverage for the procedure, they told me it would hurt a great deal.  The dr. did not like hearing that someone told me that, and he told me that he would recommend I go under IV sedation for the procedure and that I wouldn't remember a thing.  He also gave me a high level outline of the procedure, and emphasized that I wouldn't remember a thing. I asked about side effects since these are involving steroids, and he explained the advantages to me of it not being nearly as systemic as taking an oral steroid (which I had already done and it did not help).  The dr even said I could go back on my Vitamin E (which the other dr said I had to stop taking) - I take it to manage pain in my breasts, so I didn't like having to go off it in prep for the epidural at the other location.

Oh, I also asked about a specific diagnosis - he took out a cutaway model of the human back and used it to explain things to me.  Apparently, I have what may signal a pinched nerve as well as arthritis in some particular vertebrae (L4 and L5 I think?).  He also said that I have a bulging disc, but that all in all, my pictures don't look too bad.  However, he said that sometimes a little bit of arthritis can cause bigger problems and pain than the pictures would show.

I think I am having a series of these epidurals, and the first one is setup for this coming Monday 09/08.  The scheduling staff at the PM office is also super nice -- and funny too -- she is going to try to get my insurance approval rushed through in time for Monday's appointment.  She said with a little luck and prayer etc. -- and she told me not to worry about it, she is on top of it, etc.  The other place, I had to make phone calls and ensure that my pre-authorizations and network status were okay, which is how I found out it wasn't, and the appointment had to be canceled.  This office, they do it all - which is great when I am trying to work and in pain, not to have another set of phone calls on my list to complete.

Everyone there was just so efficient and friendly - and they even ran on time, even though I had a mid-morning appointment.  I am a little concerned about all the money that the hospital, doctors and procedures are costing - I know that I will be meeting my $2500 deductible in no time, and soon I will have to come up with that money.  My husband tells me not to worry, and that we are going to be fine. I do have it in savings, so it's not like the mortgage won't be paid because of this etc. etc. It's just one more thing to worry about lol.

After my appointment, I was really hurting, so I took a Percoset and tried to have a little breakfast.  By the time I finished my food, I fell asleep, and my husband let me rest until my next meeting.   I have a tortiseshell colored kitty who curls up next to me and stays by my side when I am not feeling well.  She is very happy to be with me -- the more ill or in pain I am, the more steadfast she is.  Although, if I am healthy, she can be downright indifferent - she is a very contrary cat!  >^..^<

So now I am winding up my workday (I put in some extra time because of the dr appointment) in my home office.  My husband is bringing me home chicken enchiladas from my favorite Mexican place.

That sounds very promising! So happy for you! On the cat, that's so funny - we have a cat that is pretty independent, but when I am down with a migraine he always climbs up on the bed and curls up next to me and gives me light rubs with his paws. He seems to know I'm in pain and is tryng to help.

Well this is interesting -- I just got an email from the hospital radiologist, that gave an exact diagnosis based on the Xrays of my back taken in August.  (Way to go on getting me those results very quickly huh, LOL).

Anyone care to forge an opinion?  I won't hold you to it, but there's lots of medical jargon that is interesting:

FINDINGS- There is mild disk space narrowing at every lumbar level. No
compression deformity, spondylolysis, nor spondylolisthesis. Lower
lumbar facet hypertrophy. There is malalignment between the tip of the
sacrum and the coccyx. This could be secondary to old traumatic injury
or normal anatomic variation.

CONCLUSION- Multilevel disk degeneration. No compression deformity,
spondylolysis, nor spondylolisthesis.

I have no useful information to add but I want you to know I read this thread and send you my best wishes. I don't know anything about spine problems though I know my dad got those injections a few years ago and didn't like them. He now self medicates instead......like father like daughter I guess. At least I didn't get the back problems. Fate gave those to my brother instead. All the army does for my brother is give him high dose motrin. @sshole military doctors don't seem to care much.

I am sorry to hear that your brother is suffering.  One thing to keep in perspective about military doctors -- many of them are there because malpractice insurance is not required.  I hope that your brother gets the pain management he needs.

Jeez they were taken in August? Nice to know people care that you are suffering, huh? Well at least you have a name as to what iasgoing on with your back. U fortunately, iknow nothing about spine diagnostics either. :(

I am in the pain clinic, early for my scheduled epidural procedure.

I am getting nervous. My husband is super hyper from nerves (that's his way).

hi, I'm sorry to hear your getting it tight, some nasty shit your going through. I've done my back in before. Fractures, chips, nerves. I've been through alot of treatments. I had two types of pain. One in my lung from nerve damage in my spine and then a dull cronic ache t4 & t5. I took all the pills, did the trigger point injections etc etc. I had a lignocaine infusion last week and can say that one of the pains is gone completely, the one in my lung. Completely gone. I can life with the other pain with 10/500 DHC x5-8 a day. mabe mention it to your Doctor. I was so fed up with the pain I was in. Just managing to get to work etc for the last two years. the pain in my lung was the worst and its gone completely. i'm well happy. Just keep fighting, nothing else for it. good luvk

Hi - I am home now and still very groggy 7 hours later from the anesthesia. I was in pain and took something + a muscle relaxer. I don't like this feeling, just want to sleep. Thanks so much for caring!

Hey Shaynagrl, I don't know whether this is relevant, but it has helped a lot of people I know... Including myself

It's called the 'Bowen technique' or 'Bowen Therapy'...

It works by releasing bodily stress at a very deep level, via its calming effect on the Autonomic Nervous System. It's a series of small and deliberate muscle manipulations designed to trigger the body to heal and realign itself. Unlike other 'hands-on' therapies, Bowen does not attempt to force the body to change (like a chiropractor) instead it asks the body to recognise and make the changes necessary to bring it back to homoeostasis (physiological equilibrium).

I am not suggesting it as a one stop treatment plan, but could work well alongside and in conjunction with the other treatment you are receiving...

Plus, it's seriously relaxing and an almost magical experience.... I ended up falling asleep on my first session, which is not uncommon...

However, I did end up drooling on the therapist's table!

I try to go once a month and find it a stolen moment of loveliness in my otherwise stressful life!!

Anyway, I would thoroughly recommend it as an 'alternative therapy'

Check it out if you get a mo', I promise you won't be disappointed...

Hope you feel better soon and like my lovely friend Wyldepixie said, get some rest :-)

~P~

Thanks everyone for your kind words!

I am feeling much more alert today than I was as compared to yesterday, that's for sure!!

However, I am experiencing some chest congestion and am running a low fever (high for me but not high enough to do anything about per my aftercare instructions).  The chest congestion could be related to my asthma, since I had some symptoms before the procedure but I did not medicate because I was not sure if I should or not.  I told the intake nurse about this, and she said that I could have taken my asthma meds no problem.  However, I did not have these with  me at the pain clinic because I cannot even carry a small handbag now. /default_sad.png  My husband said that the chest symptoms could also be from the anesthesia I had.

Anyway, so I am working today but from home.  I had a very rough night pain-wise last night, and I could just not get comfortable in any position I tried.  I used to lay flat on my back when I was like this, but even that hurt.

I guess I feel a little silly, because after the procedure it felt like I got kicked in my back, very hard.  I wasn't prepared for this at all.

Again, thanks everyone and esp. for the one who PM'ed me to share their concern.  I really, really appreciate it. /default_smile.png :)
