I have been growing many varieties of poppy for years, many from the indian growing fields, do these actually work as a tea?

It really depends on the variety. Some varieties can be toxic to the liver. Be careful. Don't use orientale, rhoeas or nudicaule.  Personally I wouldn't trust anything besides somniferum or giganteum. I have heard the California Poppy can have good effects like benzos but I've never had any luck with it.

Although having a few other poppies in your garden would certainly make it less hard to prove intent to grow for consumption, legally
