Testing Best Practices

New here, and I've looked around to find info on testing your purchases. I see people often mention that they "sent it to the lab" - but what labs do this for consumers? I realize there are individual kits you can purchase to test at home (f3nt, Xyla, reagents, etc.). Is that what most people rely on? Sorry if a dumb question but appreciate any input.
