For anyone who's never heard this version of "Born in the USA" before, which is probably most, it's well worth a listen. With only Bruce, a 12 string and a mic, it bears no resemblance to the album version, which was conceived by his label's A&R people to achieve the commercial success it enjoyed. Well worth the 3:00 investment of time to hear the dark, slide guitar styled, delta blues inspired version that the artist originally envisioned. And if you've never heard this song's back story, it was written out of anger and frustration towards the US government's treatment of Vietnam veterans, including members of Bruce's own family as well as members of his E Street Band. Ironically, the vast majority of the listening public never understood the song's lyrical undertones, given the album / radio version's strong, driving anthem-like sound, which was perceived as being a "proud to be an American" theme.
Enjoy.....
