The Official Automotive Thread

Or better yet, go create an account and ask a seemingly innocent that has probably been answered once or twice (or a hundred) times before.  And see what kind of response you'll get /default_laugh.png
Bunch of A-holes in most cases from my experience. It's funny how those guys can spend all their time on the boards and be such dicks sometimes to a new persons questions. Sure it's in a sticky somewhere, just say so, but no need to take extra time to jump all over someone.

I sometimes suspect those guys don't do much actual working on cars as the new people posting an already over answered question.

Im a major lurker on the national boards I use as those seem the worst. On one I think I have posted 13 times since 2008.

Even when I posted 100% accurate information on a thread with pictures providing 100% proof from a car that has been in my family since purchased new, some people still post crap opinions that I am wrong and so are the photos. Like they can't imagine that in the 60s an auto factory may have built the same model cars differently in some cases to use up old parts, or because they didn't have the L360.1 paint on hand and only the L360.2 so they used the .2 to keep the lines going.

Not sure about you guys but I find the more local boards for your particular vehicle type are much nicer places to post and get help and information.

@Heisenberg,

Oh, man - now I've gotta know which cars you're talking about, but of course I'll respect the privacy you want to maintain. Hmmm... who makes a 3.8L v6, well that could be a lot of cars.  It think I have an idea of the 2.5T tho.   Well... maybe not.

I like talking about this stuff, but do you really think there's risk to anonymity I we stick to general info?   I mean, no countries, provinces, states or license plates; we s/b okay, yes?

Oh - I see your new post.   You are talking about stuff that's unique and could be tied back to you personally, right?

Regards,

PR
I will email you later PR /default_smile.png

As for the lower part, its a bit of what you are referring to, as well as a bit of paranoia on my part I guess.  But your guidelines are good ones for sure, especially no license plates.  It is pretty easy to pull someone's personal info by running their license plate characters.  I edit mine when out when posting on car forums, there are a lot of weirdos out there, and you never know what people's motives are.

Not sure about you guys but I find the more local boards for your particular vehicle type are much nicer places to post and get help and information.
I suppose that makes sense.  I am a member of a local car club, but we don't have our own forum.  Just a closed group facebook page.

Oh, not paranoia at all.  I get it now (I've always said I'm thick).   @SmokeyJoe, I agree completely - when you're sitting in your driveway with with the hood up on your 2006 Honda Accord and want to replace front brake pads but it's not what you expected, the best place see what everyone else did when they found the clips snapped off is the forum for the 2006 Accord and check the KB for brake pad changes.  There are only a gazillion 2006 Accords out there and someone's gotta know, and they're probably all helpful. Right?

H on the other hand, you're probably talkin about custom work.  Maybe you've modified an original 'cuda with a custom paint job, hemi and chrome headers, fire engine red with Walter White on the side fire-breathing blue crystal flames.

Okay, maybe that's a bit out there but it would be cool, and if you had shown your work as part of the club you wouldn't discuss the specifics here.

When I was in high school I already had pretty good auto mechanical skills due to my Dad letting me buy a Baja bug from a friend of his when I was still 15 years old, I worked on it until I was 16 and could legally drive it.

But my cash was low and my home mechanical engineering skills were pretty bad as far as some of the performance enhancements I made on that Baja.

I created a turbo out of my VW motor by redirecting one of the heater air tubes from the heater box and directly into the carburetor, no filter at all. I plugged the other tube so more air would flow into the carb.

People who have had VWs know that more air blows with more RPMs so I figured it would really give a boost, and surprisingly it did!

At that time I couldn't figure out why my motors didn't last long, as I blasted dust and debries directly into the carb and cylinders via the fan /default_smile.png.

Even funnier is at that time I saw another guy driving a baja with the same setup and always wondered if he copied me or came up with the on his own too.

My high school/teenage car years were a lot of fun looking back now even though at the time most of our cars were pretty close to rolling junk piles.

Man, you guys talking about all these classic cars, making me feel young /default_laugh.png

Currently have a late 90s and a mid 2000 vehicle. Have only owned two other vehicles in my lifetime (yeah I'm probably a bit younger than you guys). The newer one is my project car, with AWD and a turbo from the factory, it was a great platform to start with. Have done a LOT of work on it over the years, many suspension/brake upgrades, has a larger than stock (but still DD friendly) aftermarket turbo, which spools quickly and makes good power. Upgraded fuel pump/injectors/intercooler/exhaust, etc. Some exterior bits also, I could go on but you guys get the point. It is fast, and handles like its on rails. It will induce a "holy shit!" out of of anyone who rides with me, if I decide to give it some throttle, or hit backroads or some of my favorite curvy on ramps.

The late 90s is a larger vehicle, much more ground clearance, I take it camping or off road, help people move with it, etc. Ironically, the 3.8L V6 in it gets better mpgs than my newer 2.5T H4 project does. So I DD the older vehicle more frequently.

Sorry to be so vague guys, but due to the nature of this forum, I don't want to be too specific. Jewy has seen pics of my project, and can vouch for its beauty /default_laugh.png

You DO realize that we are going to have a "friendly" rivalry. Im on the (there's no replacement for displacement team) and you can be on the super turbo rice burners. I must give you shit from time to time (naturally I can take every bit that I dish out) but everyone, know this......when I'm running 145 MPH in a small block V-8 and a fricken AWD subaru is keeping up with me, as I throw HATE at that car, you have no choice but to respect it. Just had to throw that out there /default_biggrin.png
LoL, I hear ya. You must be one of those people that considers any Japanese car to be "rice". Personally I see rice as the big Walmart wing, coffee can exhaust, cut springs, decal plastered imports that are plentiful around here. Most of them are Hondas in my area. Too many people watching the terrible F&F movies and thinking they must have 1.6 liters of fury, despite the fact that their car makes less ft/lbs of torque than my lug nuts require.

And since you mentioned "super turbo", I'm gonna break my own rule here and share a pic of me and my turbo, before I installed it:

I didn't realize you has a station wagon
Well I used to, actually.  But I liked to call it a "sport wagon". /default_wink.png  Or on the weekends, a "shaggin wagon". /default_tongue.png

No laughter here, I enjoyed reading all of that. Thanks for sharing Beranda.

Edit: Just wanted to add that Toyota is a great car manufacturer. I have worked on a lot of them, and they are overall very reliable and solid vehicles. I am especially a fan of their older trucks, as well as the newer Tacomas and Tundras.

I'll post an amazing Top Gear video of an older Toyota truck later, after work. Some of you may have seen it already, but its certainly thread-worthy.

KK,

This may not have worked for you as your kids were closer together; but when my child was born, I was still driving a 'smaller' vehicle.  (They called it a backseat; but I never actually met a human that could honestly sit in it, more of a back fold)

We just hitched a Sea-Do to the back and went slow over bumps.  As long as we tied the car seat down tight; the baby was fine. (The few times she tipped over; we just put up the flag and came back around slowly to turn her face up again).

Like I said; I would NEVER have tried this with multiple car-seat bound kids...but for the benefit of others reading this topic and thinking they have to abandon their sexy rides; you don't necessarily have follow the car seat manufacturer's diagram to the letter.

Parenting is all about being creative IMO.

yes i'm mil but keep it on the down low lol.  I have insurance for my 2006 Infiniti m45 sport through USAA. ill put in a loan request now online and see if it will get approved or not. Didn't even think in trying USAA, I was going to other little mom and pops banks and financial services and got denied. I cross my fingers USAA will come through before the Z28 is gone
Be sure to run the car you want through the car buy service they offer.  They will give you 3 dealers in your area and a price that is a few K off invoice, not MSRP.  Might save you some $$$$....  S-

I liked those smaller trucks they used to sell, I had a 1985 Nissan and it was great.

What's considered a small truck these days to me is practically a full size truck, it would be nice to see the smaller ones available again especially in a Toyota.

Drove the other vehicle in the family today. A early 90 Toy hylux.  She's a bumpy, rusty ol' gal; loud and the pipe rack doesn't exactly add to her aerodynamic abilities, HOWEVER, there is just something pure about windows down (no AC) and rust falling from your headliner with every bump.
