Thinking about Joining a black church

I'm a white guy, and was raised religious, but I don't find the right spirituality in the church that I was raised in. Was thinking about joining a Church in Harlem where the Preacher is a black man. He's the only guy that is talking sense in these tumultuous times. Would it be weird/socially acceptable to join a mostly black church if I'm white? I personally don't see the problem but I think my parents would find it kind of weird. Should I care what my parents think at all?

No, you should not care. When it comes to religion, it doesn't make sense other than to follow your heart and soul. As long as you aren't joining a cult, I don't see why your parents should mind.

Thanks I agree with you. If I look at the issues from a spiritual point of view, the Catholic Church which I suppose I am a member of does not correspond to my political beliefs or otherwise. Therefore I find it necessary to listen to the word of the Lord through a person who is off the opposite skin color as myself. My parents are kind of racist though, particularly my mom. I don't think she would understand. But i guess she won't have to know. I'll just tell her I'm going to work or something haha.

The Catholic Church i.e the Vatican is more into sun & satanist rituals unbenown to many of it's followers.At least I suppose you would be praying with the people whose decendants wrote the bible itself(Old Testament,Book of Jasher,Apogrypha,Book of Enoch)Book of the dead of which all are derived.Original New Testament also & the revised King James(Black) Version.If thats anything that spiritually means anything to you.The only people of pale skin in the area(Palestine/Judea) of Biblical times were the Romans & it was East Kemet(Africa).There is no such thing as the middle east thats a colonial concept to fool the masses.   Rivali

I don't see a problem unless you are going with your parents(as you mentioned racism).And you don't bring firearms as Black people welcome everyone at their own detriment. Rivali

thanks for the tips Rivali, yes certainly I won't bring my mom along if I go, but I think even she would learn to like it if I was really into it. She might go if since she likes church so much, I don't particularly think she cares about the denomination. I don't think she's an utterly hopeless racist, she's not a hardcore KKK member or anything like that. It's just that she was born in Europe in the early 40's. So she has a few misconceptions, but she certainly didn't preach overt racism. If anything she taught us not to be racist. My parents were both like that. It's just that she still has a sort of bias when it comes to skin color.

Yeah common situation that one & natural. I have Pale skinned & Dark Skinned people in my family. Seen it all when it comes to race. I judge from character myself & how someone treats me.I personally think we are tribal/social creatures,so the way we live in the "west" goes against this.Then you look at the world & it seems they want us all to be "individuals" & tribal societies seem to get bombed or moved. Strange world indeed. Rivali

yeah I definitely am the same way. I treat people by character too. I used to be a bit racist when i was young. I think it was mostly in my head but going to a all black school was a little scary for a white boy. You aint kidding I was watching a movie on how the airforce recruits drone operators to kill people in in Warizan or something like that in Pakistan. Some of these people that get tricked into doing this end up with sever psychological damage. I'm talking suicidal type feelings. The drone strikes have to end.

I am Caucasian and I've attended black ,specifically, Baptist churches for years. I have always been welcomed. I was raised Catholic but found myself missing something spiritually when the Latin mass was discontinued. I couldn't actively connect anymore. Lately I've been attending church with my son's family he goes to a mixed ethnicity Christian church. They are spiritually enthusiastic also.

@Dory - I hear you.

I need to stay connected so I can make sense of my story ... starts w/family ...

  4. xenxra @ xenxra: yeah but isn't the password restricted to sponsors anyway? why not just make that section private like the other ones? or is "brand new members" inclusive of sponsored accounts that are newly registered?
  5. Gracie5 @ Gracie5: The password isn’t given automatically, at least by me. I don’t give it to brand new members.
  6. xenxra @ xenxra: dm admin for password. i still don't really understand the purpose of the password section if it's just given out freely to anyone who is a sponsor.
  7. N @ Nebulon Kitty: I've recently donated to become an opal member, and posted in the thread after the donation. How do I go about actually getting the password to the members area and my Opal status.
