MoneyGram-ID Required for SENDING?!

Is this a new thing for MG?  Maybe it's just at Walmarts or maybe just the ones near me...It seems to have just started as it wasn't an issue back in mid-late June.

Are there any other places that do it where you fill out the form rather than use the phone?

Any help is appreciated!

Were you using cash? This is troubling to me since that is my go to sending location. I have not sent MG since mid-June and wasn't asked then. Now I'm scared to try it. Looks like more CIM in my future.

Yes, but they asked the second I handed them the form.

theyd recently posted signs that said ID required for receiving, but this is the first time I've been asked while sending. Happened twice at two separate locations

@dcp_pj5 Did you notice management staff around?  Or, was the amount large?  I thought I read somewhere on DBG that amounts exceeding a certain number could require ID?

@dcp_pj5   If you are close to a Cvs you can use the electronic kiosk. I use the kiosk exclusively and have never been asked for id.  You do have to complete/pay at the register but it has been seamless so far.  I have actually developed a bit of a relationship with the manager and he has never asked who, what, where or why?   I just make idle small talk about the weather or sports.   I would recommend going to the mg site and seeing whats available other than the Evil Empire (Wally World) in your area.  Hope this helps.....Seems Cvs has in my area has the market cornered as far as kiosks go.  Best of luck!

I sent a money gram at CVS on June 2nd and used an electronic kiosk.  It was the first time that CVS has asked me for my ID.  I purchased several things at the same time and wondered if that was the reason ID was required.  Ive been tied up with construction at my house and I havent made another order since then.  I have hoped that MG would never require an ID, that will really mess my ordering up big time.

It's been a few months since anyone posted if ID's are mandatory now with in store MG transfers.  We have 7-11's here with a kiosk.  I wonder if that's the same as the cvs a couple of you have mentioned?

My most recent encounter:   Went to loan type place that also does MG.  Filled out form and guy also helped me at check out.  All he asked was my DOB, address, etc.  Then asked if i knew the person i sent it to.  Even though on the phone they said they need a picture id, he didn't check.  Like i said in a recent post, the smaller places are better because they actually WANT the minimal commission fee they get.  I looked into using the "V Machine" or something that does MG at convenience stores like 7-11 but it looks like those are getting phased out and the ones that have those machines (like a huge atm machine) don't offer the MG option.  The big box places like wally don't care about your or the commission and if you can get a grumpy cashier there it can put you off your game!  lol

I just came from Wally world and used MG.  They ask for I.D. ( that's a first )  Then they had info on the

last years order to this vendor's pickup name I was using again.  Different name?  The lady asked!  WTF.

I 'll try another Wally world down the road next month and see what they ask.  Sure seem the counter

person was whacking away on her touch screen much longer then usual.

@anonanonanon Why do you feel MG/WU is putting both parties at risk? Just curious as to your reasoning, as everyone wants to be as safe as possible; so any information is helpful.  Thank you, in advance.

People, sorry to get this topic back up, but anyone have issues with moneygram in person payment recently? I think its standard across all moneygram locations to show ID proof. The last I used moneygram was 2 years back to send a donation to a friend and they still asked for ID.

Wondering if there is any benefits of paying through moneygram online vs in person? Yes for online, you do pay with your CC, but anyone could have used your CC.

@colorblind   I would advise against paying online.  There is a 99% chance that your transaction will get refused and you may or may not have problems in the future using Mg.   I use a kiosk at a Cvs that is much like an atm and is completely automated.  Once you complete your transaction that way, you go to the counter to pay for it.  I have never had any clerks ask me for Id when doing it that way.   I don't  know why people are so hung up using Ids anyway.... If you dont use your real name and the transaction goes south, then you can almost certainly kiss the money goodbye.   There is nothing illegal about sending money...

Just to repeat...Online transactions to sy's rarely, if ever work.

Thank you for posting this. I wish I read this about 2 weeks ago when I tried online and got so freaked out when I had to call the customer service and they started asking a million questions.. totally freaked me out.

Here in europe if you send more than 1500 euro in a 3 month period they will ask for proof of ID.

I have been asked and have provided them with said documents in the past and have never had any problems.

The reason they ask is under the money laundering laws in my country, so no real reason to worry..

Wow.  I wish I had read this thread earlier, both of the vendors that I have made donations with seemed fine with me doing MG online. I didn't have any issues whatsoever, no questions, phone calls… Nothing. But yes, I can see the risk now after reading this thread.   And honestly, it's just common sense… I'm not sure why I didn't think of it sooner. I will set up bitcoin for my next donation.  Feeling like a completely dumb newbie after reading this.  And yes, I did one MG donation at fartmart in person and was asked to provide my ID.  Unfortunately I live in a rural area, no CVS around. So in the future, it will be a bitcoin for me.

When you use your c.C online, because of the amount of fraud, it takes longer and they can refuse to transfer the funds for any reason. This happened to me twice, once online with RIA and once with WU. Total hassle. You get your money back at least. Once WU called me on the phone an hour later and asked all kinds of personal questions like mother's maiden name and so on.  I strongly recommend doing MG OR WU in person even if they verify your id.

Yes its true ! As from June 17th all people who want to send a Moneygram has to have photo I.D. Also the receiver also has to have photo I.D to collect the Moneygram. How this will affect things , I don't know ? But its because they are trying to stop Money Laundering , or so they say !

My family and I are safe ATM. @mellowella thank you, but they cleaned me out. the shelves are empty but I'm hoping to call in some favors to restock ASAP. @xenxra I will reach out to set up a secure comms channel for us. Thanks again all. Yesterday was tough, but the support I've received from those I can share is with has been a Godsend.
  6. tiquanunderwood @ tiquanunderwood: Mad love to you and your family @CalFresh
  7. xenxra @ xenxra: @CalFresh if you are able to DM me (in a secure manner) the transactions associated with your btc theft, i can look into that part for you at least. i;m still 99% certain if the fbi didn't discard my leads they could have gotten some of my coins back and considering you had your coins stolen within the us, you have a much better chance of recovery than me. unless they went through mixers i could probably trace them myself.
  8. O @ Outsider9173: @CalFresh Haven't been here long but I want to wish you a fast recovery

  14. mellowella @ mellowella: @CalFresh are you and your family safe? You’ve helped me in a pinch and were more than generous, and I’m sure you’ve helped others. How can we help you? Does it help at all if we completely buy out what’s left? Maybe that gives time and funds to restock and rebuild? I don’t want to break any rules here, but please let us know if we can do anything. All on your time of course.
  15. CalFresh @ CalFresh: thanks guys. I'm pulling together what I have left and leaning on the kindness of folks who support me to restock my shelves so that I can keep the lights on. Having my savings drained and my security vanish in an instant is paralyzing and the repercussions will only be realized in the coming days and weeks. for now I'm just trying to stay focused on the immediate priorities for ensuring this doesn't. cause cataclysmic failure to the life I've built for my children and I.
  16. H @ hotdog45: @CalFresh hey man if I can do anything, anything at all to help you get back on your feet let me know. Truly my heart goes out to you. I sent you an email also
