APAP and My Liver

All I know is you rarely ever hear about Percodan with asprin anymore.

Yes, Ibuprofen has it's own side effects, most important is your kidneys, and like Merlin mentioned, your stomach and esophagus. Also I've heard about trouble with hemroids too. It's too bad that adverse effects are often generated by a doctors negligence.

i hurt my back at work and have been giving me norco 10/325 and diazapam for the pain.i take about 6-10 norco a day to keep under that 4000 mg max of actomenophen but you have to watch that 1000 mgs is max at 1 dose.i use n-acetyl-l-cysteine (nac)to help the liver as it promotes better liver function.you can get it at gnc for $15 for 60 or just use the internet(cheaper)i am not saying that it will allow you to over do the apap just use it as a supplement.

L-Cysteine is a great Amino acid (Acetylized or not) to use that aids in liver health! As is a supplement called Liv52! Def. research that product, when taken on a regular basis, will definitely help keep your liver in tip-top shape! And one of my other favorites/secrets for liver health, is Barley grass AND Wheat grass (Both raw/in shakes AND in supplement form)!! These are both some of the best things you can ever do for your liver, whether it is compromised or not! Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is responsible for more overdoses and hospital visits than even ALCOHOL!! How crazy is that? Be very careful! As years back it was recommended to not go over 4 grams (Or 4000 mgs) of Acetaminophen per day (Maintenance and 8,000mg per day on a single use basis) to avoid complications, etc. however, in more recent years, it has been revealed/said to be much lower... As doctors are now keeping their daily allowances in the 2000mg-2500mg range... If you are prescribed Hydrocodone (Vicodin, Lortab, etc.) and/or Oxycodone (Percocet, Endocet, etc.), if you find a "compounding pharmacy" and you ask your doctor to write you a script for it, federal law, allows Hydrocodone/APAP preperations to go as low as 15mg hydrocodone to 85mg Acetaminophen and 10mg Oxycodone to 85mg Acetaminophen!! A lot of people do not know this, considering the "big pharma" companies out there only pump out 10/325mg (Hydrocodone or Oxycodone to Acetaminophen) pills for prescription (For the most part, there are some exceptions); where the consumer is forced to do much more "leg work" when going lower. However, if you are compromising your liver function and plan to remain on pain treatment opioid therapy for the (un)foreseeable future, I would def ask about a 10-15/85mg preparation for sure!Take care and be safe all!

I really had a hard time way back in 2005 to get compounding for a standard injury..........However if you need to take them every day I would try to find compounding but IMHO it is extremely hard to find. Personally you are better off just taking the APAP out of the equation. There are so many other combination's with aspirin Ibuprofen etc that you can demand from your doctor.

Thanks everyone who has contributed here nicely to this subject. I remember when I was in Marine boot camp, they doled out Motrin for everything. Sore shoulder - 800mg Motrin, blisters 800mg Motrin, pulled wisdom teeth 800mg Motrin. It was given away like candy. None of us 18 year old kids knew about how toxic it was.

I remember on the last day in the field in bootcamp we had to go on a ten mile hump with all the gear. On this hike was the dreaded Mt. Mother-fuc***. It was a huge deal that had recruits scared from day one. Well, finally that day dawned and we got going at 3am. I was having tendonitis in my right knee from running in boots on concrete for the last 9 weeks so I knew that this hump would seriously tax my painful knee. I didn't know the properties of Motrin and thought is was a pain killer instead of an anti-inflamatory drug. So I popped 7 800mg Motrin before that hump to keep the pain down. Of course it didn't help but I'm sure my liver loved me on that day.

Taking acetaminophen on an empty stomach causes a condition called acetaminophen toxicity. That alone kills 100 people every year. Toxicity occurs when your body cannot process the drug quickly enough. Acetaminophen, in itself, is a deadly poison to the human body. However, a healthy liver produces enzymes to counteract the poison. This is what gives us the analgesic effect that we all know and love from the drug. When someone is not receiving proper nutrition, the liver slows down on how quickly it can produce those enzymes. In turn, that leaves us with the poison in our systems.

Sherwood didn't the recomendaton pass in 2011 and it was just a fricking suggestion to drug companies? There are still going to make that crap.

Have any of you guys ever heard of or tried to do a Cold Water Extraction?

Worst case scenario, if you get a script for whatever and it's mixed some of the nasty apap/etc stuff nobody wants with their meds (which happens really often) you could just cold water extract all that shit out and be left with just the pk itself.

It's a really easy process. You don't need ANY chemical or scientific knowledge, and really the only equipment you need is something to crush the pills, a bowl, a glass, and a coffee filter. /default_smile.png
OmegaMan, yes I've tried the cold water extraction. Just google the phrase and you wil find a few ways to do it. It may take some practise. On the plus side, you don't lose any of the product, it's all there in one form or another!

Good luck,

Lynx

Cold Water Extraction is your friend! APAP is not very soluble in cold water, where hydro is.... Do a good search and do your liver a favor.

Oh, nevermind, I see someone already mentioned it.

Does this process really work?

I hardly ever drink alcohol but occasionally like to have a couple of beers after a couple of Norco's. I know this could have serious health risks but like I said it's only 2-3 beers and 2 norcos now and then.

Will this extraction process work without wasting the hydro?

Yes, done properly, it works very well.

Has anyone here every done this? (CWE) If so can you relate your experience. PM me if you like.

Thanks

Great topic. I take Percs 3 /4 per day. I know pharmacies that compound. I may have to ask my pain doc about changing to a straight 10 mg without the apap. I get the 40mg OP's but I don't take them as I hate the time release.

I've started taking a Milk Thistle supplement I got on Amazon. Not sure how helpful it really is, but based on all I've read, it won't hurt.

Hey I started taking the NAC capsules, which is also supposed to be for the liver & they do make me feel better.  Only taking (1) 500mg/day,but I can tell a difference, I may increase it to 2 per day (which is what most people take).  The NAC has great reviews on Amazon.

I was considering the Milk Thistle also, not sure if I need to take both.  Do you take milk thistle capsules or the kind you mix with water? Seems everything has APAP in it, so we need to protect the liver the best way we can.

I take the capsules. I also have the NAC, I wonder if you can take both?
