A lot of talking heads blaming Merkel and her immigration policies on the vote for the UK to leave the EU, but let's face it: Without the UK, Germany, and a snooty look from the French (and the Swiss, who mainly speak French anyhow), the EU had no fiscal or policy platform to stand upon.  Here's to you for your courage, British ladies and gentlemen, I'll raise a nice Porter in your direction this evening, and pray that the rest of that crumbling edifice (the EU) falls apart as soon as possible.

Today has been brilliant! When I went to bed last night, the last thing I read was that Nigel Farage was predicting that Remain would 'edge it', so I went to sleep a little doubtful. Then I woke up this morning with the sun shining and had a little feeling that Leave had won. So I eat my muesli, get my coffee then anxiously turn on BBC News on the internet. Then I see it: 'Cameron resigns as Britain votes to leave the EU'. Wooo hooo! That carried on all day, it's brilliant!

There's a lot of upset lefty liberals on social media, but, for once...they lost! Like you, I genuinely hope and believe that this will be a domino effect. The Netherlands doesn't seem keen on ever closer integration with Brussels; maybe they will be given the choice (which they should whenever they want - democracy, something the EU loathes).

I dream of a Europe of nations, not a European superstate.

One thing I don't understand, is why so many of the left-leaning Remain voters are vocalising such disgust and such (apparent) fear and anxiety at the thought of an independent, sovereign United Kingdom. Why does sovereignity scare them that much?

 
I'm delighted also, a blanket trading area is one thing, but it's grown too many arms and legs for my liking. We've never really considered ourselves a "part" of Europe historically. More a nation to keep the balance just right in our favour.

 
My Mum has a place in France, she goes there several times a year to work as a self-employed French translator. No more freedom of movement in Europe, not even for her.

We both voted for "remain", so many people are not happy.

I agree with you to an extent @ElectroNymph, I don't agree with 50-50 referendums either, a close resultcan put people at loggerheads with each other. I think at least 60% of votes cast is a safer way of gauging the nations mood. But of course, turnout has to come in to play also. 

 
I don't think Switzerland have full EU membership. They voted not to join in the early 90's, but instead agreed to some bilateral agreements with Brussels to give then access to the European markets. They were only interested in the economics side of the EU.  They never had laws dictated to them like Britain and other full EU member countrys like immigration etc. The Swiss economy is one of the most competitive in the world. I think Britain needs to come to the same type of agreement.  

Its funny that the Scottish government are asking, or trying to push for another independence referendum. It seems like they want to get back on that sinking ship lol    

 
The Swiss are in the same boat as Norway, they aren't members of the EU, but they are still signatorys to many treaties and yet get no say or representation in Brussels. Nippy Nicola can bang on a she wants, any referendum (neverendum) would have to be granted by the UK parliament. If it does happen again I forsee even more hostility, things still haven't cooled down from the last one. It's left a horrible legacy.

It's rotten how the EU developed into what it is today, all behind a veil of unity and peace; it's vile. And they still use that as self-justification: 'peace in Europe'. I think of 'no-go zones' in Western European cities, I think of a cataclysmic shift in demography, I think of the dilution of national identity under the bland flag of the EU, I think of Cologne and want to weep, I think of the violent scenes on the borders of the Baltic nations... I do not for one minute think of peace under the wretched EU!

I hope that this will not be about the UK adapting to life without the EU, as I hope it results in the disintegration of the EU altogether. That might seem bold, but the way I see it, something as inherently undemocratic and twisted as the EU has to go. I think the UK can be proud that they have fired the first shot. The battle's far from over, though.

I do understand concerns about the loss of free movement; that free movement was obviously hugely beneficial, but you have to ask yourself, at what price was it? It almost seems like bribery. The EU has mastered the balance of bribery and blackmail so flawlessly.

This surge in populism is an inevitable backlash against decades of political correctness and regressive liberalism. The powers that be only have themselves to blame for it.

And I think Nicola Sturgeon resembles a fart in human form. Just my opinion there.

I am from the USA and I am not for Trump but Cruz.

Only time will tell if it was a good thing...  right now our markets are tanking....  Perhaps it will stabilize and rebound....  night buy on the cheap now...who knows?

 
Yeah, it was always gonna affect the markets @Gallon, I'm sure it will stabilise soon enough. Germany has lost a big ally on certain issues though, there's quite a rough North/south divide in the EU. 

 
Apparently parliament has the last say on wether the UK stays In or Out.  Looks like the referendum could mean nothing.  If that's the case democracy has proven its self to be a hypocrisy. This could spark civil unrest if the government goes back on their word to give the people the chance to decide their future.

I think civil unrest is a great danger as it is, when you get a near 50/50 split it causes masses of friction as seen with the Scottish independence referendum, never mind Northern Ireland. There's a good chance we will be heading for an early General Election anyway, but the sooner some leadership is shown in government the better. 

 
I don't think a early General election will happen this year or next year. Labor want to get ride of Jerry Corbyn, and the Conservatives are in a state of disarry.

It would probably go the the way of the UK Independence party if it's held early.     

 
I agree, but I don't think we'll see a 5 year government. Labour are completely imploding right enough. 

 
Markets hate uncertainity, but certainity for the United Kingdom will come in time.

As far as parliament not implementing it, I think they realise how suicidal that will be. The governing party making that decision will shoot themselves in the head and be voted out. UKIP will get far more votes, which may actually count for something despite the rotten first past the post system. Euro-scepticism would rise even more. And maybe most importantly, if 'Brexit' wasn't to be implemented, I'd have a really strong urge to kick a random hippy in his dangly agony area.

As far as civil unrest goes, it pains me to say that I think that most of Western Europe is a powder keg at the moment, but like I said, I really hate saying that...

But the politcal mood does seem...turbulent. Corbyn's a very sticky piece of bogey and doesn't seem to want to shift.

Nothing was in the system. It was a huge mess. I had no clue I was signing up for Real ID. They asked me for the exact same documents that I needed for a State ID Card.

  18. B @ bigblueallda: Well it was a state id renewal. Before that there was a mixup and I had lost my birth certficate and social security number. After a couple of weeks and finally getting several documents in order I was able to get a state ID. It had been expired previously for a little too long and they wanted all kinds of proof. It was a mess. But nah I looked up what to look for an my state's ID to see if it is a Real Id or not and my card as the symbol it is supposed to have. I'll take a closer look though

  20. drjimmy1964 @ drjimmy1964: Actually it says "Not For Real ID Purposes". That is my 2022 renewal of my 2018 picture ID. I am not due till 2026 and I am sure they will make me go in since my pic would be 8 years old - they used to make you go in in my state for aging when I was younger, then went paper - then back to picture ( I think 9/11 to blame for that ) but relaxed it.
