Orange Juice And Grapefruit Juice Enhances Potency

That is so interesting to know. I take Benzo's always read on the bottle to not mix with grapefruit or the juice just never thought to look up why... Thanks guys, that is good to know !

this really isn't true. It doesn't potentiate it but it slows down the metabolities that break it down so basically it just increases the duration of the effects

I was vey curious about this topic so I did some research and came up with a pretty good article on grapefruit juice and bensos.  Mods, please feel free to edit if I have broken any rules. I did my best to edit out many of the meds.

There’s been quite a lot of conflicting information about whether or not various benzos are potentiated by grapefruit juice or not: So here for your viewing pleasure is what has been able to dig up.

Grapefruit juice inhibits Cytochrome P450 (CY3PA specifically), which is found both in the liver and the wall of the small intestine. These enzymes metabolise benzodiazepines. The theory is, is that if the enzymes are inhibited then there will be greater bioavailability of the drug (for example, requiring lower doses to get the same effect). However it’s not quite so simple. This effect only comes into play if the parent drug is subject to extensive first pass metabolism. Drugs with high oral bioavailability (because of low first pass metabolism) are not affected by enzyme inhibition significantly.

Obviously grapefruit juice does not have an effect if benzodiazepines are taken parenterally (IV or IM), because first pass metabolism is eliminated.

People have seen it stated in various places on the net that it is only ruby grapefruit that has effect: Not so. Most of the studies were done with normal white grapefruit.

So, here we go.

Benzos definitely potentiated by grapefruit juice:

H@lci@m, V@ls and V@rs@d

Bensos definitely NOT potentiated by grapefruit juice:

Z@n@ies

Benzos theoretically potentiated by grapefruit juice, but effects probably not clinically significant (because of high oral bioavailability):

Kl@nop@n, Add@v@n, D@lm@ne, R@st@ril

NB: No studies have been done on these benzos specifically

Another factor that comes into play is the duration of intake of grapefruit juice. Tri@zol*m particularly has been studied. Studies have shown that although a single glass of juice increases plasma concentrations and half-life, repeated glasses of juice over three days has an even greater effect. This effect lasts for about 3 days after discontinuation of grapefruit juice.

Some other tit bits gleaned: Grapefruit juice is not the only juice to inhibit CY3PA. Others having an effect are: black mulberry > wild grape > pomegranate > black raspberry. All however have less of an effect than grapefruit. Star Fruit also appears to be a potent enzyme inhibitor. Pomegranate juice also inhibits CY3PA

On a side note: Other downers affected by grapefruit juice are: bus@ir@n% (strongly clinically significant), Z@lepi@ne (moderate significance), and Z@lpi@m(unlikely to be clinically significant).

In fact, through my *personal studies*, I've come to learn that the best way to increase the meds effect is to pair your benz' with a few ice cold bottles of budweiser.

Call me old fashioned, thats what works best for me /default_wink.png
My sentiments exactly. Orange or grapefruit juice never made a noticeable difference for me. Budweiser always made a tremendous one. Lol

There are lots of potentiaters just be carefull.gaba(gamma aminobuteric acid) is a grate potentiater over the counter.clonodine.quinine also. But never heard of o.j. potentiating opiates. I know it contains vitamin c which inhibits the absorption of opiates

I remember a friend who had a (bad trip)on acid over 20 years ago,we gave him lots of fresh orange juice and it seemed to help him come outa the (bad trip).

Nor really relating to the thread but all the talk of fruit juice triggered something in my head ?.

Bliss....

Just grapefruit juice.  White grapefruit juice is the better of the varieties out there. Orange juice doesn't do shit to inhibit the receptors that are inhibited by grapefruit. Tagamet works on the same pathways.

Pure grapefruit juice  (not pink) does potentiate di@zap@m in my experience but perhaps it just prolongs the effectiveness of the di@z.But this doesn't work with x@n@x so not all BNZs just probably the ones highlighted in the above post.

Most informative btw.....

Bliss....

Orange juice doesn't potentate.  Pure grapefruit juice will potentate most thinks according to articles I've read.

Wow, this is actually the first time that I've heard something like this believe it or not and I've had scripts for over a decade for these types of meds. My question is (may of already been answered, haven't fully read through the thread yet) seeing I have a high tolerance to these meds and supposedly these juices increase the potency does it actually effect the tolerance at all? I mean yes, if it effects the potency of the meds then clearly it will develop a higher tolerance to it but in the case of being exposed to these medications for a very prolonged period of time would raise the tolerance levels.

If so, I need to stay away from it. Hints why I'm asking, I need to be tapered off them eventually and increasing the potency is not my goal.

i used to hear about grapefruit juice and tried it several times i never noticed any enhanced effects not even once.

  1. xenxra @ xenxra: @WTF7218 it may as well be that way with how little effort some of the people on here make to find information that's exactly where you would expect it to be.
  2. ontovzik @ ontovzik: When I had long term shingles, lasting two months. All he could give me was a 10 day supply of dilaudid. He looked at the ground while we were talking about it. I could tell he was ashamed but it was the legislature and the governor that tied his hands. He was very upset that non-medical political people, the media, and the scared public were controlling how he treated his patients. Someday those people will need meds and a hospital bed and they will be gone.
  3. ontovzik @ ontovzik: I had a great doctor, he had the true gift of a healer and he stayed on top of all the science. He straight up told me that for many people opiods work for managing short and long term pain.
  4. ontovzik @ ontovzik: He peed it in the snow in my backyard.
  5. WTF7218 @ WTF7218: @xenxra 😆😂. Yes, but only a few brave souls will ever find the number. You must first order a Dirty Shirley from the bartender. Then you must discreetly take the cocktail napkin from under your drink and unfold it. There you will find the map to the location of the phone number, and clues to decipher the code that it is written in.
  6. xenxra @ xenxra: he left his phone number scribbled in a stall at the pub three blocks down
  7. N @ NYStateofMind: @Alkazar I would try one of those easy online ones .. reddit gives useful info about that
  8. Alkazar @ Alkazar: @NYStateofMind I dont really have a history of abusing things, my docotr is just really stingy. I am thinking of switching.
  9. C @ Cheesus: Thanks xenxra
  10. xenxra @ xenxra: @Cheesus yeah, use snote
  11. P @ psychedpsych: Trump is cracking down….
  12. P @ psychedpsych: Hackers are the scum of the earth
  13. N @ NYStateofMind: so it was easy bc of my history
  14. N @ NYStateofMind: I didnt really tell him but he knew I needed a new script since my dr went to jail
  15. N @ NYStateofMind: @xenxra I was on Adderall since 15 years ago so my dr prescribed that w no problems and then when I lost my best friend my doctor rxed the valiums but
  16. C @ Cheesus: Temp.pm down for anyone else?
  17. xenxra @ xenxra: @NYStateofMind my doctor's have always been pretty open minded if i can actually come in and explain the pharmacological action of the drugs im seeking instead of just telling them why i think i should be prescribed. the only time it didn't work out for me is when i was trying pharmaceuticals for depression ten years ago and suggested they let me try testosterone instead (turns out i was hypogonadal so they made a mistake denying my request at face value)
  18. T @ Testisthebest: Even down here in Florida when the pill mill docs all switched over to Suboxone and/or retired you can still find some pretty liberal docs but you gotta know what to look for. Mine does "pain management, detox, anxiety, etc. And no insurance. My doc writes me 60 5mg Valium, 14 2mg Xanax and asked if I had ever tried adderal to get more focus at work as I told him I run my own business.
  19. N @ NYStateofMind: @Alkazar do they know your history? Like I dont tell my doctor anything about myself except what they need to know,...I was able to get my dr to rx the highest dose of adderall along with valiums ..... if they dont know your history or there is no history I would just come out and ask what is the reason for their mistreatment.... they have no problem billing your insurance or taking a payment for the visit
  20. T @ Turbo259: @Layne_Cobain Thank you fam
