A nice VW.

Agreed!

Nice pic indeed.

SJ, I notice you are a big fan of classic VDubs, what are your thoughts on some of the newer ones? A friend/co-worker of mine has a GLI, its a real nice car IMO. The 6 speed is fun and good match to the 1.8T. The 1.8T is not too powerful or very torquey, but from what I understand that powertrain sees good gains with some exhaust work and an ECU reflash. The Recarco seats in his GLI are amazingly comfortable and hold you in tight. I also like the factory 18" mesh wheels (BBS iirc?) on it. Clean looking car.

We have 2 VW owners in our local car club, a Golf with the VR6 and a newer TDI. Both have various modifications done. Have not driven either one of those, but they are certainly nice to look at.

Yea the GLI and GTI and I forget what other model they have too are very sporty models and are all very good overall. They are for sure the sportiest car in the segments they are in and a lot of fun to drive.

We traded in our 2003 Jetta a couple years ago and looked at the VWs and like them, especially that you could get all wheel drive in many models, and we like VWs (had an 88 Jetta too).

The new VWs got decent gas mileage especially the TDI and were sporty and drove well. We almost got one of the VWs again but went with the C30 instead even though the C30 is front wheel drive only.

The VW was a better value on price dollar for dollar due to the all whee drive, but the C30 had more horsepower and was less expensive.

Some of the slightly modified VWs, slightly like no tails of large fibre glass ground effects kits, are very nice. Many very nice water coolers show up at events as most are combined air/water cooled shows and the work done is impressive.

The water cooled VW crowd is very different from the aircooled VW crowd, mostly younger people and many of the VWs are their primary vehicles that they customize.

Anyone looking to pick up something AWD before winter sets in? Here's your car!

Well hell, if Katw Upton loves Subarus, consider that bad boy sold! And, uh, why are you just NOW letting me in on the "secrets of the blubaru"?!
And all this time I was hoping Katw Upton liked "established gentlemen" in a black big body Benz. Who knew?

I like these cars too and other 70s models and think nice ones would only go up in value. Those cars had large engines and were mostly overlooked by the speed crowds when they came out, so not many of them are around now.
Those big cars ride nice on highways too for road trips, but not so good for cornering or parking in those small parking spots most places have these days.

Sure! But actual size may vary from the picture shown /default_smile.png ( think Hot Wheels)

The color of both the VWs is Sea Blue.

It's a color not seen as often as other colors of VWs and there is a big split of opinion on what color Sea Blue #1 (L360.1) and Sea Blue #2 (L360.2) are, and what color was used on the Buses and what color was used on the Bugs or other VW models.

I have put much time into figuring this out, as have about a dozen other oddballs like myself, as it is important to get colors right when trying to do a stock factory look restore.

I was actually able to read a response written by a very old retired VW factory worker in Germany on this subject and he said SeaBlue#1 was for Bugs and SeaBlue#2 was for Buses. However he also said if the factory ran out of Sea Blue #1 paint but had Sea Blue #2 on hand that they would paint the Bugs with Sea Blue #2, and the reverse too sometimes so some buses were painted with Sea Blue #1.

The difference between the two colors is slight, one is more green looking. I feel like I figured it out and I think the old factory worker is correct. But despite his story and me having actual touch up paints from 1970 from Germany with clear lables to look at with my eyes (no cameras or computer monitor color differences added) and doing very thorough searches and research and seeing many original factory painted Bugs and Buses, people still cant agree.

For the owner who bought their Bug or Bus new, the color it came with is the correct color to them. At shows with two original sea blues next to each other when they sometimes don't match, if each still has original paint each owner will insist their shade is the correct shade.

Some useless knowledge no one cares about and didnt need to know about Sea Blue!

KK,

Automatic or standard?

Gets great mileage and the way you can get around all those texting drivers...love it!

By the way, did you go with a 2013/14 or a classic?

I'm just driving the dust pan/hand broom, but when I get my tax refund, I'm going to upgrade!

Just the first half of the video.

Hi SJ,
How's it goin'?

Great flick!

I used to have a '68 and did all the work on it myself from clutch cable to carb rebuild, muffler replacement (what a b***ch) to tune ups. I miss the old air cooled models and the ones with the sephamore turn signals (the little arm comes out from the center pillar right or left) http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=j_-6rDD1jfg&feature=youtu.be&desktop_uri=%2Fwatch%3Fv%3Dj_-6rDD1jfg%26feature%3Dyoutu.be.

I never got to see the '43 with the split rear window, tho, but me and my friends were religious about the bugs. I worked from a dog-eared copy of a manual called "The Guide to Volkswagen Repair for the Complete Idiot." I think that was the name, anyway, and it was very helpful, let me tell you.

Alas I had to give my baby up when I needed more room.

Great pics, tho, too!

Regards,

PR

Haha, but No not at all true for you.
And I don't see any cup holders on that so it would not be a good commuter vehicle!

Yea PR the old VWs are cool and the ones with the semiphore turn signals are hard to find in an unrestored state anymore.

The repair manual you mentioned is on my shelf. It was given to me as a gift a few years ago and have read through it a few times, its kind of funny in parts with all the commentary. I never used it for repairs though mostly so i dont get it dirty and I use a couple other 1970s era books that are now falling apart and covered in oil and grease stains.

That 1943 VW Bug in the video is really nice, and seeing the original flat dark paint on it is kind of unusual in light of the trend of a few years ago of people painting restomods in flat black. I thought that was a modern thing to use flat paint on cars.

Wow the Blue VW in the video that is being moved on the car hauler the lady is riding on is very nice. Someone did a really good job restoring that one /default_wink.png.
